Literary Arts

Program Overview

Literary Arts at SCAPA is a progressive, creative, and immersive program that prepares students to pursue writing or a writing-related life path after high school. We focus on creating young writers who have a developed, unique voice and have a strong grasp of literary tradition. Literary arts is designed to enhance technique and support artists who have a passionate interest in writing. Students are challenged to create their own work as well as read widely. Writing skills are built through creating and presenting or publishing works six times a year in a variety of genres, mediums, and forms. The program's blend of writers and access to diverse mentors across the commonwealth offers our young writers the opportunity to explore their craft in a continually evolving, rigorous, and contemporary environment.

Curriculum

The Literary Arts Program fully instructs students in the art of Poetry, Short Story, Novella, Novel, Screenwriting, Graphic Novel, and Experimental writing. Students learn daily in a studio environment based on their grade level. Our instruction begins with the basic form and function of writing through fiction and nonfiction and creating a community of writers that will support the student’s ability to build their artistry and self-worth. As the program progresses, students demonstrate independence by taking full control of their creative process and output. Additionally, each grade level collaborates on a class performance. Freshman organize an open mic. Sophomore’s host a launch party for a literary journal. Juniors plan a writing conference. Seniors organize a writing treat workshop.

Outcomes

Literary Arts prepares students to live a life as a writer at the intersection of multiple identities. Fundamentally, our writers enter the world as well-rounded creative thinkers who are hardworking and collaborative. Our students attend 4-year colleges often with scholarships, attend creative writing workshops all over the country, publish their books to critical success, or enter the workforce with the skills and dispositions they learned in our program. Our vision is that they continue to live and love the art inside and around them.

Program Accolades

Literary Arts Students have been recognized by Scholastic as Gold Key and Silver Key Winners. Our graduates have published critically acclaimed work in nearly every genre and attend prestigious writing programs with valuable scholarship offers.
