SCAPA Lafayette Information Night, Tues, Sept 9, 6PM - LHS Beeler Auditiorium
Approved 8/5/24: This procedure shall be in effect beginning with the 2024-25 school year. Grades earned only during the fall semester of 2024 and going forward may impact a student’s probation status. Grades earned prior to Fall 2024 will have no impact on SCAPA Diploma eligibility.
In order to earn a SCAPA Medallion and Diploma, students must complete all graduation requirements of Fayette County Public Schools as well as:
Two arts courses in your major/gifted identification area each year you are enrolled in SCAPA. See specific course requirements for each SCAPA arts discipline.
As a senior capstone project, ALL SCAPA students are required to earn a FCPS Seal of Arts Excellence in your major discipline for eligibility for the SCAPA graduation designation (diploma/medallion). Students planning to graduate early should apply for the SoAE in their junior year in order to be eligible for your SCAPA diploma. Additional arts seals are encouraged for those students who excel in multiple disciplines. More
Students must maintain an A, B, or C in SCAPA major classes during every semester of their SCAPA Lafayette enrollment.
Students who do not maintain an A, B, or C in their SCAPA courses at the end of the semester, will be placed on probation for a maximum of 1 semester. If the SCAPA grades do not return to an A, B, or C by the end of the probationary semester, the student will not be eligible for the SCAPA Diploma and Medallion.
Only one (1) probationary period is allowed per a student’s high school SCAPA enrollment.
The student, parents/guardians, guidance counselor, appropriate administrator, and appropriate SCAPA Major teachers will be notified of probationary status by the SCAPA Program Coordinator.
Students on probation will be expected to create and implement an improvement plan in coordination with teacher, parents, guidance counselor and/or any other appropriate personnel. Students must demonstrate regular and ongoing efforts to improve performance including, but not limited to: out-of-class tutoring or remediation, and other academic or non-academic support.
During the semester of probation students must show improvement from the prior semester of at least one letter grade at the end of that semester.
Students may have no more than two (2) semesters below a C grade, including no more than one (1) semester of a failing grade.
Students entering the program as a junior, can have no semester of failing SCAPA grades and no more than one semester below a C to maintain eligibility for SCAPA designation medallion/diploma.
Students entering the program as a senior, can have no semester of SCAPA grades below a C to maintain eligibility for SCAPA designation medallion/diploma.
Appeals of this process can be made to the Lafayette Principal and SCAPA Program Coordinator. Appeals will be considered for extenuating life circumstances. Students must demonstrate continued and ongoing efforts to improve performance including, but not limited to: out-of-class tutoring or remediation, seeking academic or non-academic help from school support staff including teachers, counselors, mental health, or other outside appropriate resources.
As indicated in the Lafayette Course Directory, students enrolled in SCAPA classes will be required to participate in out-of-school rehearsals, performances, masterclasses, theatre production hours, juried events, presentations or readings (as applicable per arts discipline) in order to satisfactorily complete these courses.
Any student who earns credit in three or more related arts courses in the same discipline outside of your major will be recognized as having earned a minor in that area. Related arts courses outside of your major will NOT be SCAPA classes, but Lafayette electives courses only. Minors are not required and are intended to encourage interdisciplinary involvement and are for recognition purposes only. Students changing their major will not qualify as a minor. Example: three theatre classes in addition to a SCAPA voice major will result in a theatre minor. Students will apply for graduation recognition of their minor during spring of their senior year.
Students who graduate early shall be eligible for a SCAPA medallion during the semester they attend commencement. Students who continue enrollment at Lafayette (such as for Opportunity Middle College) but are not enrolled in a SCAPA class, shall not be eligible for a SCAPA medallion upon graduation, as the student has exited the program early.
Students studying abroad or at a boarding school may request that their SCAPA spot be held for up to one (1) year. After a one year break in SCAPA enrollment, students who do not return will be exited from the program. All requests must be submitted in writing for prior approval to the Lafayette Principal and SCAPA Program coordinator. No more than one year break will be approved.
Extended Hospital/Home placements will be reviewed on a case-by-case basis.
SCAPA Designation for completion of the program is recognized by a presentation of a certificate of completion, arts-discipline medallion to wear at graduation, and recognition at the SCAPA Senior Banquet. SCAPA designation is also read when the student’s name is announced at the Lafayette Commencement ceremony.
