Spring 2022
Spring 2022
From the SCAPA Facilitator
The Spring is always an exciting time as our year builds to a crescendo. The excitement of culminating performances, senior recognitions, and commencement fill our Spring schedules. This year has been exciting and challenging for students and staff, exciting to return to in-person school, making art together, and live performance events, yet challenging to make up for lost time. All of our students have grown as artists and people and I encourage parents and students to take some time during this season to reflect on that growth and be proud of individual successes both big and small!
To our incoming SCAPA students: We are so excited to welcome all our incoming SCAPA students to Lafayette High School in August. This Fall we will welcome 107 SCAPA students (90 freshmen). We invite you to choose one of our many end-of-year events and get to know our programs that you will soon be a part of. We are also planning a brief orientation session especially for new SCAPA students to compliment Freshmen Ignite which will occur in August. Look for more details to come this summer!

After a 2-year hiatus, Kentucky Music Educators Association All-State groups were back with in-person performances this past February. Lafayette SCAPA regularly leads the state in numbers of All-State ensemble participants. 2022 was no different! This included 108 LHS students in total, 82 of which are SCAPA students. Selection for All-State is always a rigorous and competitive experience. Congratulations to all of our All-State musicians!

KMEA All-State In the News
All-State Choir students have a tradition of singing the National Anthem from the hotel balconies at the Hyatt Louisville each night of All-State. Videos of this went viral several years ago and this year Steve Hartman from CBS Evening News came to Louisville to share the experience with the nation. Look for one of our SCAPA students in the interviews.
Band
Congratulations to Lafayette Band!
All three Lafayette Bands received distinguished ratings from all judges at KMEA Large Ensemble Assessment Events in March. Congratulations to students and directors on a successful demonstration of artistry and skill at this important assessment event.
All Lafayette Band students including SCAPA Band majors performed a concert of chamber music on February 18. Chamber music has been a part of the Band curriculum for several years and develops different skillsets from concert and marching band. Chamber groups consisted of French Horn Choir, Low Brass Choir, Double Reed Choir, Clarinet Choir, Saxophone Choir, Trumpet Choir, Flute Choir, and Trombone Choir. Students received instruction from Instrument-specific specialists from Lafayette Band staff who rehearsed and directed each chamber group.
Chamber Ensembles
Lafayette Wind Symphony joined the Henry Clay Wind Ensemble on March 8th for an exchange concert! Congratulations on an evening of outstanding performances.
Congratulate 2022-23 Lafayette HS Band Drum Majors: William Allen, Madelyn Johnson (SCAPA), Amanda Woolum (SCAPA), and Sam Dailey (SCAPA).
Dance
Lots of great things are happening in the dance department! After 2 years, we returned to the Opera House stage with 2 amazing performances of Dance SCAPA! We are so proud of the dancers' hard work and dedication! We are truly thankful for the support of everyone who helped Dance SCAPA make an amazing comeback. We cannot wait for next year!
Also, several of our students made it through to the final round of GSA Auditions!

Scholastic Art and Writing Awards
The Southeastern Regional Scholastic Writing Awards were released in January. With 27 Lafayette-SCAPA Literary Arts students submitting 63 individual pieces and 2 portfolios of work, we won 10 Gold Keys, 14 Silver Keys, and 21 Honorable Mentions with 69% of our submissions receiving some level of recognition. (For comparison, in 2015, our high-water mark for awards was 20; this year, we nabbed 45. In 2021, we won 6 Golds: this year, 10. )
All Gold Key winners will now compete on the National Level. Since 1923, Scholastic Writing Awards has become the nation's longest-running, most prestigious recognition initiative and the largest source of scholarships for teen creative writers.
