Fall 2021
Fall 2021
Greetings Families and Students:
Welcome to the inaugural issue of SCAPA Lafayette News! Several times each year we will use this newsletter to look forward and celebrate good news. Lafayette has always had an impressive commitment to the arts. The arts are in our DNA. Because SCAPA and Lafayette Arts are deeply connected you will often see programs, events, and good news that exemplify this connectedness. Lafayette and SCAPA have an incredible synergy that can only happen through vibrant arts programs and a large comprehensive high school. We think you will agree when you see and experience the artistry of our incredible students and their dedicated teachers.
Ryan Marsh, SCAPA Lafayette Gifted Facilitator
New Roles at SCAPA Lafayette
Whether you joined SCAPA through SCAPA Bluegrass or SCAPA Lafayette, you all know Mrs. Carla Pleasant with whom you communicated during your application and audition process. For 23 years she has served as Bluegrass and Lafayette's SCAPA Gifted and Talented Facilitator responsible for applications, auditions, gifted service plans, senior banquet and much, much more. This past summer Mrs. Pleasant took a new role as administrative dean at SCAPA Bluegrass and as a result is no longer working with Lafayette SCAPA. We congratulate Mrs. Pleasant on her new position, wish her the best, and thank her for her years of dedication to the SCAPA Lafayette program!
Filling the Lafayette facilitator role will be Mr. Ryan Marsh. Mr. Marsh has taught at Lafayette for 19 years serving as the choir director and performing arts instructional leader. He is excited and ready for the challenge of leading SCAPA Lafayette into the future.
Mr. David Page left Lafayette in this past spring to move closer to family. Mr. Page served as Lafayette's art department instructional leader and SCAPA Visual Art 1 & 2 teacher for many years and will be deeply missed. In his place, Ms. Sarah Detraz takes over as the instructional leader and SCAPA teacher for visual art levels 1 & 2. We are excited to have Ms. Detraz join the SCAPA team!
Literary and Visual Arts Collaboration
During the Fall 2021 semester, writers and artists of the SCAPA-Lafayette Literary and Visual Arts programs collaborated to produce Off the Page: A Collaboration of Word and Art, an art show featuring written memories and artistic interpretations. Each writer in the Literary Arts program wrote two vignettes, a compressed form of narrative centered on a single memory or experience from their childhood. Each artist in the Visual Arts program selected one anonymous vignette to interpret and represent using any medium they chose. The collaboration took three months to complete, and all artists and writers will meet each other for the final installation on Friday, November 19, at 9 a.m. in the Lafayette High School Media Center. Students were instructed by SCAPA-Lafayette teachers Sarah Detraz (Visual Art), Liz Prather (Literary Arts), and Teresa Stofer (Visual Art).
Band
Congratulations to Lafayette Band!
Lafayette Marching Band is back after a pandemic hiatus in 2020! The Pride of the Bluegrass brought home the state title for the 22nd time this past October. From drum major Hayden Arnold to section leaders: Jenna James & Amanda Woolum (flute), Alex Bradbury (sax), Sam Dailey (low reeds), Gabe Curtis & Jackson Greene (trumpet), and John Koenig (trombone & baritones). SCAPA students also play a key role on the band council: Madelyn Johnson, Maddie Andreatta, Jill Peterson, and Rebecca Stankiewicz. Congrats to all the members of Lafayette Band!!
Dance
Dancers celebrated with Mrs. Mills on the September birth of her son Jackson Zane. Mr. Harvener served as her long-term sub and led the dancers in many exciting styles and techniques. Dance majors participated with the SCAPA Bluegrass dance majors on 2 successful fundraisers: Holiday Poinsettias and Greenery, and SCAPA Dancewear. Funds will be used for Guest Artists and other department needs. Our guest artist for Dance SCAPA 2022 is Dr. Meredith Sims. Dr. Sims will be coming for 2 days in December and 5 days in January to teach master classes and set choreography on the dancers for the March performance. Dancers are looking forward to their return to the Opera House Stage March 17-19, 2022!

Masterclass and Juries
The past two weeks, our SCAPA students have participated in our after-school masterclasses hosted by the music faculty from Northern Kentucky University. Dr. William Herzog, violin; Dr. Amy Gillingham, cello; and Dr. Holly Attar. Students have been working in small chamber groups and performed for their peers and the professors. They received important feedback to apply to their jury performance. Juries were held in class and judged by the directors for their final grade.
Concert Review
Our Fall Concerts went well and our Chamber Orchestra had an opportunity to perform with members of the SCAPA Bluegrass. It is always nice to bring the two groups together for this yearly tradition. Check out our website to listen to any of the selections performed.
Be sure to mark your calendar for our upcoming Winter Concert on Thursday, December 9 @ 7:00 in Beeler Auditorium. We will be featuring all our orchestras on this performance along with members of the band program joining us for two full orchestra selections. Associate Principal, Claire Gorski will be our guest conductor this year.
As the semester wraps up, we want to remind our SCAPA students about the program requirements for Recital Attendance and Community Service. SCAPA students are required to attend two professional or collegiate string recitals or orchestra concerts. These performances must be a college or professional orchestra, chamber, or recital performance. Students are to submit a concert program for each performance. Students are to accumulate four hours of public service per year. This could include mentoring younger orchestra students or performing for nursing homes, hospitals, or public venues (outside of school and CKYO performances). Service hours should be music-based and logged on this form.
Fiero Strings perform at Kentucky Aviation Hall of Fame.

Governor's School for the Arts
For students, GSA is a life-changing experience! For three weeks every summer, over 200 of Kentucky’s most talented and creative high school students are invited to grow and learn together at the Governor’s School for the Arts’ college summer residence program. Rising juniors and seniors in high school are offered in-depth instruction in one of nine artistic disciplines: architecture + design, creative writing, dance, drama, instrumental music, musical theatre, new media, visual art, and vocal music. The honor of experiencing GSA includes:
Attending the program is FREE (all students receive full tuition, room and board).
Opportunities to learn in a supportive community of distinguished master-teachers.
College preparation, career counseling, and the chance to meet college representatives during an exclusive GSA college fair.
Arts-related community service opportunities.
The excitement of performing/exhibiting at the Student Festival at the conclusion of the program.
Serious fun!
Students are immersed in a rigorous schedule of daily seminars, master classes, lectures, hands-on workshops and field trips. While each student specializes in one art form, all students participate in structured, interdisciplinary arts experiences designed to familiarize them with the joys and challenges of specialties other than their own. Upon completion of the summer program, students become part of the ever-growing GSA alumni network, gaining a variety of opportunities such as scholarships and funding through the Toyota Alumni Fund.
Application, recommendations, and screening videos are due by January 9, 2022!
Take advantage of the various preparatory opportunities that GSA offers throughout the months leading up to the application due date. Recordings of past sessions can be found online.
NEW for 2022-2024 - GSA Doubles Enrollment!
As part of a partnership with the Kentucky Department of Education, GSA will be able to double its enrollment for the next three years. GSA will be able to offer placement to nearly 500 students in each of the next three summers.
Lafayette SCAPA arts teachers are ready and willing to advise and coach students on their preparation for GSA. Utilize our in-school resources to best prepare for this terrific opportunity.
Looking Forward
