Responsible for the vital exchange of gases for life support & generating air stream for speech production
Consists of:
rib cage
thorax
abdomen
trachea
diaphram
lungs
any musles associated with breathing
Functions:
Primary - the vital exchange of gases for life support
Secondary - generating air stream for speech production
Muscles:
The main muscle of inhalation is the diaphragam, which contracts as inhalation begins
In order for respiration to occur, the lungs must increase their volume during inhalation and decrease their volume during exhalation
