The Larynx
Contains the Vocal Folds which are the most important part of the larynx and provide the sound source for speech
Primary Function - preveting foregin substances from entering the respiratory system
Epiglottis - A "leaf-like" structure that folds over the larynx during the swallow to protect the airway from material entering and falling into the lungs
The larynx contains intrinsic and extrinsic muscles.
Extrinsic Muscles: responsible for support and fixation of the larynx
Intrinsic Muscles: necessary for control during voice production
Responsible for phonation: the sound production of speech
Function: produces sound for speech using air that flows through the lungs into the larynx via the respiratory system
Timbre: refers to the tonal quality that differentiates two sounds of the same pitch, loudness, and duration.
For example - each person has different characteristics of vocal quality (timbre) therefore, if one person says "ah" and then another person says "ah" and tries to copy the same pitch, loudness, and duration, they will still sound different.
