Shelter In Place

Staff

When given an alert, staff will either move students to or hold students in a particular location.

Staff understand that if utilizing a Shelter-In-Place, there is no immediate threat to individuals in that area.

Staff will monitor building communication for further instructions or for the need to change the response.

Students

When alerted by staff, students will follow instructions and remain in the location provided.

Students should know and will be reminded by staff that a shelter-in-place means they are safe in the location they are being asked to stay.

Students should know and will be reminded that Shelter-In-Place would never be used for any type of active human threat such as an active shooter or violent intruder.

Families

Families should understand that Shelter-In-Place will never be used for an emergency if violence is a concern.

The FSD may or may not release information during the Shelter-In-Place.

A Shelter-In-Place response can be utilized for a number of "non-threatening" scenarios and is commonly used during medical emergencies.  This keeps hallways/affected areas clear for EMS response.  It also keeps students away from the emergency.

The FSD will determine, based on the severity of the disruption of the school day and the effect on students, the need to release information to families via Email, Remind, Social Media, or Media Sources.
