Portraits

Assignment 10: On Campus Peer Portraits

Equipment Choices:

1. 50mm Lens

Pros: Offers a natural perspective similar to the human eye, excellent for capturing sharp, clear portraits with good color and detail. It's versatile for both full-body shots and tighter compositions without significant distortion.

Cons: Limited zoom capability; you must move physically closer or farther from the subject to frame your shot, which can be intrusive or impractical in tight spaces.

2. Telephoto Lens (e.g., 70-200mm)

Pros: Allows for shooting from a distance, which can make the subject feel more comfortable and act more naturally. It compresses space, bringing the background closer to the subject, and creates a beautiful, blurred background (bokeh) that emphasizes the subject.

Cons: Can be bulky and heavier, making it less convenient for spontaneous or on-the-move shooting. Requires a steadier hand or a tripod to avoid camera shake at longer focal lengths.

Directions:

Take each of the below photos of your partner. The photos of yourself need to be on your own SD card. You and your partner will brainstorm all of these poses and photos, but you will be graded on the photos of yourself. This means you have to check on what photos your partner is taking to make sure they are up to your standard. Submit one photo for each type of portrait of yourself using your chosen lens on your website. Include a brief description of why you  and your partner chose the lens and how it influenced your shots. Also include the ISO, Aperture, Shutter Speed, and Focal Length. Your photos will be assessed based on creativity, technical execution, varied poses that incorporate information from the lessons, and how well they convey the intended theme of each portrait type.

Environmental Portrait: Capture your partner in an environment that tells a story about who they are or what they do (e.g., a musician in a rehearsal space).

Personality Portrait: Focus on expressing your partner's character or mood. Use props, lighting, or action to convey more about their personality.

Casual Portrait: Take a relaxed and natural shot of your partner, possibly in everyday settings, showcasing them in a more informal, candid state.
