Learning Spaces

Sensory Room

The sensory room is an environment in which UV lights, music, projected images, bubble tube, infinity tunnel can be selected, requested by pupils and form coordinated programmes.

The environment is also used to present learning through a multi sensory approach.

Pupils are encouraged to relax and develop a sense of stillness by listening to music and focusing on the sensory stimulus.

Relaxation techniques and massage is incorporated within the school day within the classroom as well as in the sensory room.

Opportunities are given to pupils to experience different textures through touch and sight and become aware of the affect it has on my body

Imaginary Play

A role play area creates opportunities for imaginative play with items to adopt the role of different characters.

Pupils are encouraged to use items in a very functional way such as pretending to stir and drink from a toy cup, use an item to represent another e.g. they don’t have a cup so they pretend something else is a cup and symbolic play such as projecting real life qualities onto a toy doll / animal;

Soft Play

A small room is fitted with softplay equipment. There are 2 raised areas, one with a through tunnel and the other with a mirrored space, which is often used as an imaginative house area. A static trampoline is a favoured activity to count the number of jumps and stimulate sensory needs.

There are movable items which can be used to develop obstacle course and other creations such as vehicles and buildings.

Pupils enjoy interacting with each other, playing chases and hide and seek.

Listening skills are developed through following directions and instructions.

Movement Room

The movement room is a new addition to pupils experience within the CCS.

Pupils develop their gross motor skills including balance through use of balance boards, sensory walkways and activities.

Many pupils seek sensory stimulation and respond to deep pressure. The use of a free standing swing, squeeze machine and therapy balls, pupils have the opportunity from planned sensory exploration.

Playground

Younger children make use of the smaller, CCC playground at morning playtimes, after lunch and at other times for outdoor learning.

There are a number of static equipment including a slide and balancing beams.

A number of bikes are made available to encourage physical activity, turntaking and sharing.

Other equipment can be accessed such as balls and chalks.

For many children, playtimes are an opportunity to refresh and be alone.

Magic Carpet

We are fortunate to have both a mobile and static interactive carpet.

Interactive games and images are projected onto the floor.

Pupils can play and control these by moving on or over the projected image.

The interactive aspect encourages motor skills (movement) through a motivating and stimulating form.

The mat is large enough for children to enjoy at once, which could be used to foster social skills, such as turn-taking.

Community

Where possible, we try to plan opportunities for pupils to further develop and transfer their social and communication skills, into a real life context.

Some classes visit Linn Park on a monthly basis in which they can play in a different context. Linn Park is a safe and secure environment which our pupils love to visit.

Most classes will also visit local parks and shops in Barrhead and at times there own local community.

Carlibar Primary

Carlibar Campus comprises’ of Carlibar Family Centre, Carlibar Primary School, and CCS.

Pupils makes use of a range of excellent facilities such as an outdoor multi use games arena (MUGA), dance studio, gym hall, art room, science room, two music rooms, fiction library and e-library.

Where possible and appropriate, pupils take part in whole school events such as assemblies, nativities, parties, services and eat lunch in the main dining hall.
