Students lose up to 20% of their skills over the summer months. For students that are missing some mastery to begin with, this could prove detrimental to the next school year. This program is designed for students that might be on grade level with the majority of their skills, but perhaps are missing a few of those standards. For these students, they have the opportunity to fill in any gaps that occurred through the year.
Summer Bridging should not be confused with RTI. These are two completely separate efforts at Epic. Summer Bridging represents a level of dedication like no other school. Epic teachers work diligently 12 months a year providing instruction to students that have not completely mastered all standards for their grade levels. Summer Bridging represents an effort to avoid RTI later. This is the time to fill in any gaps before they compound and the student really begins to struggle.
For students to receive the most from Summer Bridging, Epic creates a Study Island learning path based on their spring MAP results. This learning path is the guide that shows teachers academic gaps students may still have. Our goal is to bridge those gaps before school starts so that they can start out the next next school year more successful. The basic premise of Summer Bridge is students receiving the lesson, practicing the concept with the teacher, then taking the corresponding Study Island quiz earning a blue ribbon. In addition to specific concepts being "bridged", we also highly recommend that students participate in the summer AR program where they can earn rewards.
