Raiderette Football Scrimmage 2022

The Raiderette Dance Team had an awesome kickoff to their season at the 2022 Maroon and Gold Scrimmage! They performed their “home routine” for the audience that Friday night. The home routine was choreographed by their coach, Hannah Zachman, senior captain, Magge Cowen, and past Raiderette, Kelsie Griffin, and was performed at UDA (Universal Dance Association) Camp this summer. At the camp they won 2nd place for the routine, a superior trophy for each member earning all blue ribbons, as well as the full-out award. The girls are looking forward to continuing with the football season as well as continuing on to their basketball and competitive season.

Speech Team

With mid-September rolling around, it’s time for the EPCHS speech team to start their season. Coach Melissa Diggle, who was a high school speech team member herself, is coming up on her ninth year of coaching the EP team. Speech consists of fourteen events, each with their own unique elements that make them fun and challenging. Students can choose to be involved in just one or multiple events. Senior Emma Nunnery is about to begin her third year on the speech team, and she spent her first two years excelling in Oratorical Declamation speaking. She is not only looking forward to expanding her horizons in the form of adding Informative Speaking to her repertoire, but is also excited to meet many new students from other schools and spend time with the team. Abby Huffman is also a senior, and is excitedly awaiting her fourth year on the speech team. She is an exceptional public speaker, and has demonstrated much success in her two events: Original Oratory and Dramatic Interpretation. In her own words, she is, “...most looking forward to making memories, listening to what my teammates are doing, and just enjoying my senior year of speech.” Along with one other senior and many prospective new members, this year’s speech team seems to be facing a very successful season.

Boys Golf Monmouth Roseville Invite

East Peoria finished 4th at the Monmouth Roseville Invite shooting a 323 as a team! Finishing 4th overall was junior Kenny Hoosen firing a 76 followed by sophomore Connor Watson fishing 10th overall in the tournament. The other raiders counting in the match was Breyon Maroney and Nicholas Unes shooting an 84! Great tournament and good luck with the rest of the season boys!

The Tribe

On August 26th East Peoria played their first home game of the year against Streator. The tribe showed up and showed out to support their boys while wearing their best beach gear, and let's just say they definitely dressed to impress that night. Not only were they best dressed but they knew exactly how to cheer the boys on through the game, and kept not only their own, but everyone's energy up the whole night! We asked this year's tribe leader Jordyn Gale what her favorite part of being a part of the tribe is and she said “I love seeing how excited and supportive students get for each other during the games.” Which is exactly what happened that night! We love the tribe and hope to see you there!

Chess Team

The Chess Team is a great time where you learn to play a mental sport and, while chess isn’t for everyone, it is fun and competitive for those it is for. There are near-infinite ways to play with many strategies and tactics to use, you will always see something new. With the chess team just starting (and no athletic ability required), practices are a great time for any new players from beginner to advanced to join. Interviewing last year's board one of the chess team, Brysen Lovell said “The chess team is very open, and the team that would appreciate you being there.” The chess team is not only accepting, a blast, for all levels of players but is one of the best chess teams in the Mid Illini. With many outstanding chess players on the team like Mason Brown and Brysen Lovell, the team won many matches against other schools and in tournaments with the trophies to prove it, some of which are in the library. Still, the chess team is an amazing way to learn chess for starters, get better at chess for those who know how to play, and just a good time for anyone else. Chess also has many mental benefits including attention span, critical thinking, decision making, mathematical thinking, and problem-solving being just a few of the benefits of chess. That being said, if there's a board game that can better your mental abilities it is chess. Chess is an international sport and not needing any communication with the other person you could play a game of chess with anyone in the world who knows how (to play). So with all of this said I hope you will consider showing interest in one of EP’s best-performing sports and we hope to see you there!

FTC Robotics Team Technophobia

FTC, or First Tech Challenge, is a competition where teams must design, build, program, and operate a robot to score points. It is a STEM program with thousands of international teams, intended to help students build skills needed for success in their future careers. An explanation of this year’s rules can be found at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HsitvZ0JaDc.

Technophobia is one of the three FTC robotics teams at EPCHS, and meets in the A hallway on Wednesdays, Thursdays, and Sundays from 5:30-8:30. The team consists of 4 sub-teams, including the build team, the programming team, the drive team, and the outreach team (The outreach team is in charge of arranging service hours, social media presence, and spreading the word about the team and FTC). These sub-teams are not mutually exclusive, as many team members are on multiple teams, (for example, most of the drive team is made up of members of the build team). We do not assign team leads, and we make decisions by consensus, not through hierarchy. Our website can be reached at https://www.technophobiaftc.com/, and feel free to email us at technophobiaftc@gmail.com for any questions.

FTC Kickoff

The FTC kickoff aired on September 10, 2022 where the challenge of the season was revealed. However, the EP robotics teams wanted to meet together and discuss the challenge. All three teams agreed to meet in Technophobia’s room on September 11, 2022 to watch the challenge together. At the event, popsicles, water, and homemade rice krispies were given to each team member. After settling in, the teams watched the animated introductory video on this year’s FTC season, PowerPlay.

PowerPlay is a game where two different FTC teams compete against two other FTC teams. Each team of two is referred to as an alliance. FTC Teams use their own robot to complete the task at hand. This year's task is to place cones on poles called junctions. There are four different types of junctions, ground junctions with a 6 inch diameter disk, a low junction with a pole of 13.5 inches tall, a medium junction with a pole of 23.5 inches tall, and a high junction with a pole of 33.5 inches tall. Placing cones on these junctions earn 2 points, 3 points, 4 points, and 5 points respectively. A match lasts 2 minutes and 30 seconds with two different periods. The first period is the Autonomous period where the robot is driven with prewritten instructions. After 30 seconds, the match shifts to the driver controlled period where teams control their robot with a controller and this period lasts for the remainder of the game. The last 30 seconds of the game is called the Endgame period. In the Endgame period, new scoring objectives are thrown into the mix such as placing a team's own designed game element onto a junction. Throughout the season, teams must design a robot to efficiently place the cones on junctions. The alliance with the highest point total at the end of the game wins the match.

The color guard has their practices every morning at school and two nights per week. They also participated in one week of color guard camp and two weeks of band camp before the school year even started. When asking about how prepared everyone felt I was told “We felt as prepared as we could have been.” The group performed spectacularly at their first half time show, and I think we can all look forward to what they do in the future. Great job, everybody!

Girls Cross Country Start of the Season

The Girls Cross country team competed at the Silver Streak XC race at Galesburg on September 3rd. The rest of the team consists of the sophomores Bryanna Schurter and Addison Hutson. The freshmen are Alyssa Beck, Brianna Benedict, and Elyse Strunk; although, Brianna and Elyse didn’t run due to injury. Overall it was a good race for the girls who will take the experience of their first race and apply into their future competitions where they are bound to continue to improve.

The Golf team was led by senior Brock Angle. The Raiders were led by Brock Angle firing a 39, junior Kenny Hoosen 40, and Nicholas Unes and Connor Watson bringing in 42 each. This win puts the Raiders at 4-3 and lands them in the top half of the Mid-Illini conference. This puts the Raiders in a good spot heading into the conference tournament. In the team huddle, Coach Plummer motivated the team by saying: "For the guys who aren't happy with your score, don't let a game be the reason you are mad with your life. If you are then you aren't ready for life, it's just a game."

Pontiac Marching Band Competition

On September 17th, the EPCHS Marching Band Competed at the 2022 Pontiac Indian Showdown. After participating in an hour-long clinic given by a professor from Vandercook College of Music, the band went to a nearby park to eat dinner. Even though we still had a few hours left until we performed, we took the time at the park to enhance our visual performance. We then drove back, got in our uniforms, warmed up, and then performed at 7:00. All in all, we performed well, scoring first in our division, best winds and 3rd place overall. Elijah Lucjaz, a senior this year, says “It was a solid performance. It was good, but we can do better”.
