The Inside Scoop on E-Learning

The Covid-19 pandemic has affected almost every aspect of life as we know it. We decided to get an inside look at how it has affected some of our teachers here at EPCHS. Due to social distancing guidelines we have conducted this interview via email, to which they have responded with their insight and personal opinions.

Mrs. Coughlon

What was one of the hardest things to overcome with online school?

"The hardest thing about online learning is not knowing if the students are understanding the material. I think it is hard for the students to stay focused when they are sitting at home listening to my lesson. I think they tune me out with distraction at home. "

Mrs. Moore

Do you prefer remote learning (scheduled times to be online) over online learning (flexible schedule, but requires students to be self motivated)?

"ABSOLUTELY! I know that I need structure, so I can't imagine students not having specific times to be in class. It makes it feel more like a school day and hold people accountable. It was very frustrating last spring trying to have a zoom meeting and only a few people would show up and very few people tried like they should."

Mrs. Lamb

What is one thing you like most about online school?

"I have found that I have much more patience for my own children when I go home at night with online school which has been wonderful! I try to "perform" everyday for my students and now I can "perform" for my own children because I haven't been "on" all day :)"

We interviewed new choir teacher Mrs. Keeney to ask how she´s running her class online.

What are some things you like/dislike about teaching online?

Keeney: I've been having the kids practice on call, and record themselves singing. I like that I get to give everyone individual feedback.

I just wish we could sing together and rehearse together, so we could really hear how we sound. The class is still close, but I do feel like being in person would make them closer. I feel awkward teaching in an empty classroom with very little chairs.

What is your plan for concerts this year?

Keeney: We can’t have more than 50 people, which is the whole choir, so we have to do a virtual choir this year to stay in those guidelines. In a virtual choir, you combine individual recordings from everyone in choir into one, so blending is more important than ever. I'm glad we can be more one-on-one this year so that problem is easier to deal with. We’ll probably do the same thing with chorale, but I’m not sure yet. Chorale auditions are on September the 21st and 28th from 4 to 9pm. (More info on chorale on auditions in the google classroom. code: zt7vzkk)

Do you think we have a chance of going back to in-person learning? Would you want to?

Keeney: Quarantine feels like it is simultaneously getting better and worse at the same time. I feel like we could go back, then instantly get quarantined again.Of course I want to go back. Choir was meant to be in person.

Vice Versa

Students filed into the commons after senior night to attend this year's Vice Versa. The theme was Neon Nights and the students did not disappoint. They showed up decked out in their best neon and had plenty of glow sticks to accessorize them. Co-Op at Caterpillar

For many years, high school seniors at East Peoria have had the option to work off-campus for half of their school days; this program is called Co-Op. Multiple students have used this opportunity to pursue a job at Caterpillar. At Caterpillar, students that plan to pursue a career in business or STEM related fields have been taught valuable lessons that they will carry into the real world. The following students from EPCHS hold a job at Caterpillar while still managing school and extracurricular activities.

Clayton Bray, Logistics Intern

Maya Eaton, Transportation - Performance Intern

Sondra Gnehm, Inventory Management Team Intern

Blake Griffin, GDL Intern

Dawson Gill, Logistics Intern

Paul Peterson, Engineering Intern

Belle Rakestraw, Caterpillar Defense Marketing Communications Intern

Kara Steck, Project Management Intern

Zoe Zimmerman, SOS Lab Intern

I, Belle Rakestraw, have grown tremendously from Caterpillar. My coworkers treat me with utmost respect and have taught me lessons that can't be taught in school. I have done things such as put out content on our customer facing website, composed articles for the division communication newsletter, and attended V.I.P business development events. I would highly recommend Co-Op for any student interested, as it has helped me get a head start on my future.

Volleyball Senior Night

On October 22nd, there was the final home game for 5 out of the 12 players on the volleyball team. The Lady Raiders were taking on the Pekin Dragons, which they had already defeated earlier in the season. Before the game, many fun senior night festivities took place. The 2019 seniors were Mo Hoosen, Eliana Burwell, Callie Paulson, Olivia Astbury, and Skylar Bouillon.

Even though the whole teamed was “hyped up” for the last home game of the season, the night was definitely one to remember. It was a hard-fought game, but the Raiders were defeated 28-26, 25-20. As the night was also very emotional for the girls, there was a great atmosphere present. The Tribe showed up that night and kept the girls going with their cheering.

Reflecting on their final season of volleyball at EPCHS, the seniors want to say thank you to everyone who has gone to one of their games and supported them.

Thank You Raider Nation!

Girls Basketball Senior Night

January 30th, 2020: the East Peoria Girls’ Basketball Senior Night. As one of the earliest Senior Nights we have seen in perspective to the actual season, the night was great nonetheless. This year, there were three of them: Monique Hoosen, Amanda Magarity, and Jolienne Varquez. They have each been a part of this program since freshman year, and so it was an emotional night for all of them.

The freshmen, sophomores, and juniors decked-out the entire gym to celebrate this important night for the girls. The game started at 7:00 PM and was against Dunlap High School. The gym was full of supporting friends and families, an involved Tribe, and the school’s pep band. As the energy was fully there for the team, the seniors and the rest of the team lost a tough game against the Eagles. Even though the season lasts two weeks past these seniors’ final debut, the night was one to remember for these successful girls.

Cheer Interview

Morgan and Katelyn have been doing cheer at the high school all four years. When I asked what their favorite part of cheer was Morgan said “I love being able to cheer with my friends and show my raider pride.” Katelyn said “I love the performances and helping the freshmen learn new things.” What they do at practices include learning new stunts, improving skills, and learning cheers for the games. I asked what they will miss most about cheer and Katelyn said “cheering alongside my friends and the hype of performances” Morgan said “our coach--Martz-- and cheering with my friends.” Some qualities of good cheerleaders are confidence, hard-working (on and off the field/court), strength and athleticism, and commitment and dedication to the team. If you are interested in trying out for cheer, there are tryouts in early spring so listen to announcements or talk to one of the cheerleaders for more information.

Football Senior Night

On October 25th, cold fans huddled together under the Friday night lights in support of the senior football players. They were recognized for their dedication to the program for the last four years. The seniors were Payton and Parker Bradford, Tristen Westbay, Caden Regan, Josh Orr, Brogen Stewart, Zack Willis, and Jackson Roger. The Raiders were defeated by Washington 14-49. Payton Bradford ended his season with his final touchdown, followed by a celebratory punt that drew a flag and many laughs.

MARCHING BAND SENIOR NIGHT

Marching Band Senior Night

On October 25th, everyone came together to celebrate the time and effort the seniors have put in the Marching Band program. The season started in July with band camp. Their first competition of the year was the Washington competition, and the last was on October 26th with the University of Illinois competition. This program has impacted the people who are involved in a positive way by helping the members be confident, knowing how to lead, and how to be better people.

Cheer Senior Night

On Friday, October 25th, ten EPCHS Cheerleaders said their last hoorah’s on Corwin “Cornie” Clatt Field at the last football game of the season against Washington. Seniors include - Sondra Gnehm, Belle Rakestraw, Jada Cripe, Morgan Cowen, Katelyn Angle, Savannah Morgan, Maia Tuerk, Krista Messer, Jenna Crebo, and Makenna Weber. At halftime, the seniors accompanied by the rest of the team performed a routine. The girls are so thankful for everyone’s hard work this season. You will see all ten seniors cheering on the boys basketball team with the addition of two more seniors: Olivia Astbury and Abby Eggemeyer. The girls will miss the Friday Night Lights, but they are ready to have a great basketball season!

The Variety Show

The 2019 Variety Show was a great time where students got to show off their talents to the entire school. Everyone who performed did an excellent job, and the entire show was memorable.

Drumline opened the show and played the cadence and parts of this years’ marching band show. Justin Owens followed and performed an original song on piano. Peyton Boyle and Jolienne Varquez sang a duet with Ms. Church accompanying on piano. Then, Morgan Cowen played “Speechless” from Aladdin on piano and sang. Sam Abbey sang and played “Hey Seventeen” on piano. Color Guard members Helena Bohm, Leah Johnson, and Alyssa Golez performed a routine with their flags and rifles. Gavin sang and danced to “Old Town Road” and Tweed and Piper danced to a mashup of fun songs.

The sophomore team also lost to Dunlap two games to one, with the third game coming down to a two point loss for the lady raiders. The varsity team played very well but also lost to Dunlap in two games.

Cross Country

The boys and girls cross country competed in a 3 team race between Dunlap, Peoria Notre Dame, and East Peoria on October 1st. Keaton Vandel placed first in the race and both teams placed third overall. Due to the 93 degree weather, extremely muddy terrain, and a hilly course, many runners were unfortunately injured.

Every year at East Peoria during our annual homecoming week school competition, all of East Peoria dresses up over the course of five days in different themes each day. Homecoming Pep Assembly

On Friday, September 27, we had our annual Homecoming week pep assembly. The assembly started off with the band playing our school song. After that, Mrs. Lamb announced the winners for hallway decoration, float building, variety show skit, and dress up days along with the current totals for class scores. Next, the four classes started the games to decide who would win homecoming week. The seniors started out with a decent lead ahead of the juniors but found themselves losing ground in the beginning. Towards the end of the games, the seniors managed to tough it out and win homecoming week by 175 points with a score of 1675 -1500. By the end of the pep assembly, everybody was certainly pepped up and ready for the homecoming game.

Homecoming Dance

Students dressed to impress at A Knight in the Castle. This was the theme for the 2019 homecoming dance. It was a great way to wrap up a great homecoming week and you did not want to miss it. The dance was on Saturday, September 28. It was 3 hours of straight fun with music, dancing, laughing, and having a good time. It was definitely a “Knight” to never forget.

Raider Games

The Raider Games is held on the Monday of Homecoming Week to begin all the festivities. Students from each grade level have the chance to participate and earn points for their class. This year, students competed in a taste test, Jenga, Twister, chess, trivia, bags, basketball, and dodgeball. The seniors won 5 of these events and the juniors won 3. Winners for the seniors were Joshua Orr in trivia, Paul Peterson in chess, Amanda Magarity and Ryan Piraino in the taste test, Sondra Gnehm in Twister, and Zack Willis and Ryan Piraino in bags. Junior winners were Ali Zbinden and Grace Calvin in Jenga, Mitch Ball, Noah Campbell, Ryan Lahood, Jaxson Miller, David Hidden, and Braeden Brown in dodgeball, and Braeden Brown, Jayden Williams, and Noah Campbell in basketball. Due to these Raider Game wins, the seniors started the week ahead of all the other classes.

Homecoming Parade

The East Peoria homecoming parade is not only an event for the school, but an event for the community! The parade features the marching band, various floats of teams and community led groups, and themed floats made for the homecoming competition held by the high school every year. Some teams, like the football players, raiderettes, cheerleaders, and cross country even get to ride on a fire truck during the parade. Candy is thrown out by people on the floats, which makes the parade fun for children as well! Overall, the homecoming parade is a great opportunity for the community to come together, and a fantastic start to the variety show!

Eureka Field Trip

The enriched juniors of Mr. Diggle and Mrs. Otten’s American Studies class took the opportunity to visit Eureka college and it’s prized Ronald Reagan museum on Wednesday September 19th. Students utilized this trip to further their knowledge on the topic of Ronald Reagan and his presidency, as well as take an inside look at what Eureka college has to offer. “The reason we pitched this idea and other ideas like it is to get our enriched kids, our college bound kids, on college campuses,'' Mr. Diggle reveals.

Ronald Reagan graduated from Eureka College in 1932 with a degree in economics and sociology. He would later become the Governor of California and, eventually, President of the United States. This shows our EPCHS students some of the most extraordinary careers can derive from a simple, earnest, college education.
