This half term we will be learning about where our food comes from. Thanks to Essex Agriculture Society, Writtle college and local farmers for supplying us with so many exciting resources. https://www.essexag.co.uk/virtual-event-2021/ We kicked off our topic today by planting vegetables in our trug and planting our own sunflower seeds. We wonder whose will grow the tallest?
Have you seen our amazing flowerbeds? Mrs King has been helping us to weed and clear the areas around the Year 4 classrooms. We have created circles of stones and planted wildflower seeds.
Each class have planted a tub of seed potatoes. We have also planted mint in the same pot. (Those foods that go together - grow together!) Have you planted your potatoes at home yet? Please keep us updated. If you harvest your potatoes in the holidays then please email us to tell us. We'd love to see some photos of how many potatoes you get.
We are very excited by all the signs of growth. Have a look next time that you are passing...The lettuce and carrot seeds have started to sprout in the trug, The wildflowers are starting to grow in the stone circles. The sunflowers have grown so big so fast that we are going to need to repot them soon. No sign of growth in our potato pots yet but we are sure that they are busy growing under the soil.
We watched some videos about wheat - about how it is grown and harvested and then ground to make flour. We looked at some real wheat seeds and tried to grind them into flour. We are going to use flour to design and make our own bread but first we needed to taste some different types of bread to see which tastes and textures we like the best!
As part of our Food and Farming topic, we have been designing our own bread. In order to practise our mixing, kneading and shaping skills, we made salt dough bread rolls! We had great fun and can't wait to make our bread on Tuesday.
We are still a little worried about how fast our sunflowers grew during that very very hot weekend but they are showing signs of getting stronger now and their stalks are not quite so thin and spindly. Our outside areas are looking great and we are receiving pictures of your potatoes growing at home (and even one video). - Thank you. Have a look at how much some of our flowers and vegetables have grown...
We had great fun taking part in try outs for the Rayleigh tournament with Rayleigh Tennis Club
