YEAR 5 TERM 3 LESSON 2

BUSH TUCKER

Learning Intention: We will be learning about how Aboriginals used plants and animals sustainably for food.

Bush tucker, or bush food, is any food native to Australia. The Australian Aboriginals used the environment around them for generations, living off a diet high in protein, fibre, and micronutrients, and low in sugars. Much of the bush tucker eaten back then is still available and eaten today.

Traditionally, women gathered the vegetables, roots, herbs, fruits, nuts, eggs and honey, and men were the hunters of the large land and sea animals like kangaroo, emus and turtles.

Aboriginal Australians also farmed the land for food sustainably. They only took what they needed and made sure that plants continued to grow and animals continued to survive.
