School Wide Positive Behaviours (SWPB) during Remote Learning:
Respect for Self, Others and Learning
Over the term in Year 6, we will be discussing the ways in which students can help contribute to a positive learning experience during remote learning; particularly during Google Meets.
We will be referring to the SWPB poster (see below) during these conversations and rewarding Class Dojos when students demonstrate them!
Yr 6 Google Classroom Codes. Learning Tasks will be uploaded for the week every Sunday:

FAQ (Frequently Asked Questions):
What are the Yr6 Google Docs for and how do we access them?
This term, the Yr6's are using Google Docs as a "digital work book". Each subject has a folder and dedicated docs to assist the students in their learning. Students are encouraged to use their docs to record their learning, as well as enabling their teacher to check in on their work.
To access the docs, students need to use the Google Drive app and open up a folder titled with their name. Once in the folder, there will be more folders with subject headings and within these, docs. Students open the doc here and it will automatically redirect them to the Google Docs app. So it is important students have downloaded both Google Drive and Google Docs app.
Why am I waiting to be accepted into a Google Meets?
The reason you are waiting on a teacher to accept you when entering a Google Meets is because you are using a different email to your @oldorchardps.vic.edu.au account. You must always use your @oldorchardps.vic.edu.au account when entering Google Meets.
How do I turn on my notifications?
It is important that every student has their notifications turned on. This means that they will receive a notification for stream comments and assignments, ensuring they don't miss this important information from their teacher.

How do I upload work?
The following link will show you how to upload your work as an assignment in Google Classroom.
Reminders:
The Year 6 Team request:
That your child’s IPAD/device has the most recent update to allow for better access to learning tasks.
That students are logged into their google accounts using their @oldorchardps.vic.edu.au account (e.g sha0009@oldorchardps.vic.edu.au), we will endeavour to help any technical glitches in making sure of this.
During Google Meets students should:
Have their cameras turned on
Put themselves on mute when not speaking
Pay attention to the speaker
Wear appropriate and respectable clothing
Show respect for self, others and learning at all times
Have a parent present during Meets
We are aware that some students will have technical difficulties (glitches) during this time. Please let your class teacher know if this is an ongoing problem.
Writing:
Over Term 4, students will be creating written texts that communicate their thinking and opinions about historical events and issues. Lessons will focus on writing poetic, biographical and persuasive texts.
There will continue to be a large emphasis on students using VCOP (vocabulary, connectives, openers, punctuation) within their writing and as part of the revising and editing process. Students will use Writer's Notebooks to engage in regular 'low stakes' writing and to 'have a go' at using a range of writing strategies designed to get students writing from personal areas of interest.
In Week 1, students will explore poetic devices such as imagery, figurative language, alliteration, rhythm and rhyme through an analysis of the mentor text/poem, 'My Country' by Dorothea Mackellar. Students will then compose their own poem using these poetic devices about a place special to them. This will get students thinking about the importance of place on our sense of identity; a key Inquiry concept this term.
Word Work
For Term 4, students will be using the SMART spelling approach to improve their spelling skills as well as build their overall vocabulary and word knowledge. On Monday, students will be introduced to the weekly spelling words via a mini lesson showing how to use the SMART spelling approach (SAY-MEANING-ANALYSE-REMEMBER-TEACH). On Tuesday, they will select 6 words from the list to suit their individual spelling needs (plus 2-3 from their personal spelling) and complete the SMART spelling grid. From Wednesday to Thursday, students will practise their words in various ways to prepare them for the weekly spelling and vocabulary quiz 'Kahoot'on Friday.
In Week 1, spelling and vocabulary will focus on the digraph /gn/ making the sound “n” as in sign. Students will also look closely at their own writing over the term and select personal spelling words to add to their spelling lists.
Reading:
Over Term 4, students will be reading two class texts; 'My Place' by Nadia Wheatley and 'Boy Overboard' by Morris Gleitzman. Both texts support the Term 4 Inquiry unit about Australian history and migration. In Literature lessons and Reading Journal activities, students will engage in a variety of tasks around making connections with these texts, as well as participate in whole class and small group conversations. Reading Strategies lessons will provide opportunities for students to practise and develop their reading skills with a focus on the strategies most relevant to reading and understanding historical texts. In week 1 we will be looking at timelines and understanding sequence in relation to historical texts.
In Week 1, the Literature lesson will focus on using prior knowledge about Australian history to make better connections with 'My Place'. The Reading Strategies lesson will focus on the reading strategy: understanding sequence.
Maths:
Across the term students will be given opportunities to practise problem solving strategies, as well as pursue personal learning goals through the platform “My Numeracy” in Essential Assessment. “My Numeracy” is a personalised sequence of learning activities generated when students complete assessments through Essential Assessment.
This week in maths, students will focus on time, linking nicely to our Inquiry unit of History. Students will learn and explore 12 and 24 hour time, timetables, time lines, time zones, as well as elapsed time through a variety of activities.
Inquiry:
Term 4’s Inquiry Unit focuses on History. Students will explore Australian History from many perspectives, as well as gain a great understanding of the culture and makings of Australia. Across the weeks of term 4 the students will integrate learning from the texts I’m Australian Too, My Place, Boy Overboard and various historical texts to build a picture of the diverse and rich history of Australian migration within the continent and from outside. Major events and their effects on the lives of people in Australia across history will be explored. Students will then focus on creating a project centred on a chosen Australian, their family history and migration, and what that person has contributed to Australian culture.
In Week 1, students will be introduced to the unit, beginning the process of gathering knowledge and identifying key areas they want to research. Students will also spend the week gathering their own family knowledge in order to share it with the class in display form in week 2. Through sharing this family knowledge they will practise important aspects to be a skilled historian.
