Long term potentiation
Neural plasticity is the ability of the brain’s neural structure or function to be changed by experience throughout the lifespan. This property of the brain provides the physiological basis of learning and memory.
Synaptic plasticity refers to the ability of the synapse to change over time. For example, change may occur through growth or formation of new synaptic connections that strengthen the synapse or change may occur through disuse of synaptic connections that weaken or eliminate the synapse. Synaptic plasticity enables a flexible, efficient and effectively functioning nervous system. It is also the biological basis of learning and memory.
Long-term potentiation (LTP) refers to the long-lasting strengthening of synaptic connections, resulting in enhanced or more effective synaptic transmission.
Long-term depression (LTD) is the opposite of LTP; that is, a long-lasting decrease in the strength of synaptic transmission. This results from lack of stimulation of pre- and postsynaptic neurons or prolonged low level stimulation.
