Choosing Mathematics Courses for Year 11

For students wishing to study Mathematics in Years 11 and 12, it is important to make sure that they select a course that is at an appropriate level for them. When planning for Years 11 and 12, students should choose courses that suit future needs, interests and preparedness. Preparedness is a crucial factor to consider when selecting Mathematics courses. The HSC is quite fast paced. So, if a student is not prepared for the course, it is very challenging to build preparedness once the course begins.

Transitioning from Stage 5 to Stage 6 Mathematics

The diagram below shows the Mathematics courses offered at Inner Sydney High School from Year 9 to Year 12.

If your child is in a Numerate Citizen Pathway class (10MAT7), your child is prepared to study Mathematics Standard or no Mathematics.

If your child is in an Access All Areas Pathway class (10MAT3, 10MAT4, 10MAT5 or 10MAT6), your child may be prepared to study Mathematics Advanced if they achieved excellent results. Otherwise, your child is prepared to study Mathematics Standard or no Mathematics.

If your child is in an Express Pathway class (10MAT1 or 10MAT2), your child may be prepared to study Mathematics Extension 1 if they achieved excellent results. Otherwise, your child is prepared to study Mathematics Advanced, Mathematics Standard or no Mathematics.

What makes Mathematics Standard different to the other Mathematics courses?

Mathematics Advanced, Extension 1 and Extension 2 are ‘calculus courses’ involving a high level of algebraic manipulation, respectively building on knowledge and skills developed in Express Pathway. Mathematics Standard is not a ‘calculus course’ and it focuses on the application of Mathematics and Numeracy in real-world situations. Students should look at the individual course pages to get a better understanding of each course.

Universities may require the study of a Mathematics calculus course as a prerequisite for some courses. For up to date information, contact UAC or check the university websites.

Who can guide me to select the Mathematics course that is at the right level of difficulty for me?

Your Mathematics teacher or the Head Teacher Mathematics can advise you on your preparedness for the various Mathematics courses based on your assessment results and work ethic.
