Samuel Gilbert

Samuel Gilbert was born in London in 1788.

He married his wife Mary in 1806 and over his life he had 12 children.

While in London he got into trouble for making and trying to sell fake money. He was sentenced to 14 years in jail.

In May 1816 he was transported on a ship called the 'Mariner' and arrived in New South Wales in October.

In 1825 he received a conditional pardon, which meant he was a free man but had to stay in the same place and follow government rules.

He became a successful business man and owned lots of properties. He also became a baker in Parramatta.

He was given 140 acres of land at Castle Hill. This land borders the land where Samuel Gilbert Public School is.

He died at the age of 87 in 1875.
