History Term 1 Week 8 THE PAST IN THE PRESENT

This topic provides a study of local history. Students explore, recognise and appreciate the history of their local area by examining remains of the past and considering why they should be preserved.

Investigate buildings and natural environments in the local area that are of significant importance.

Norah Head Lighthouse

Investigate the changes and continuities of the local community (family life) by the water of Norah Head and Toukley Lake. Use Norah Head Lighthouse as a local place of significance to frame the learning and the process of inquiry.

Week 8

Investigate the reasons for change in our local communities’ lives over time and the results, eg less popularity when the lake is smelly, watersports (jet skis), popularity of river/lake swimming, fish and chips, cafes with a water view.

[Discuss] Is swimming in the lake still popular? What are the alternatives?

Brainstorm reasons for lake swimming and create a poster to advertise the benefits of lake swimming, eg it is free, good for your health, fun, can do more than just swimming; watersports.
