The CIRCLE Framework for Inclusion is a good place to start in auditing the classroom environment and also for assessing and planning for the needs of individual learners.
The CIRCLE Inclusive Classroom Scale (CICS) provides a structure and prompts for reflection regarding the provision of:
The Physical Environment (this includes consideration of the use of space, the sensory environment and the use of visuals)
The Social Environment
Structures and Routines
The CIRCLE Participation Scale (CPS) can be used to consider the needs of an individual by assessing the current skills level of the learner together with the aspects of the learning environment which are particularly effective in supporting their regulation and readiness for learning. E.g. consider where in the class children may prefer to be seated: some children may have a strong preference for being near a wall or at the back of the class so that they can see the rest of the room. Others may prefer to be seated near the exit.
For many children who need support to regulate, a very effective way of reducing stress to a tolerable level will be to provide high levels of predictability, structure and routine.
CIRCLE frameworks provide a useful first step in the planning and review cycle for either a classroom or for an individual learner.
