This is an approach already familiar to many of our schools. 'Zones of Regulation' is a curriculum-based resource which supports learners to develop their self-regulation skills and gives consideration to: sensory processing, executive functioning and emotional regulation. It has a strong visual component, associating different colours with different states of arousal and sets of emotions. It supports learners to recognise their state of arousal and to learn about which strategies they can use (their 'toolbox') in order to shift to the state of arousal that is needed in any given context. Zones provides a common language for pupils, teachers and families. It encourages adults to notice, be curious about and communicate regularly about emotions and arousal states, whilst also modelling how to make sense of and manage emotions and behaviours.
