"The right to rest and leisure, to engage in play and recreational activities appropriate to the age of the child and to participate freely in cultural life and the arts."
- United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child - Article 31
At Law Nursery, our Learning Through Play approach enables children to actively engage in play, and explore, experiment and make sense of the world around them. Through play, children develop key skills such as problem-solving, creativity, communication and social interaction. The children freely access the nursery provision which is set up to provide a supportive, yet stimulating and challenging environment meeting the needs of all children. Our environment is carefully set up, providing rich, learning opportunities for children to learn as they are playing. We are developing our outdoor space to ensure equal opportunities are outside, for the children who enjoy spending most of their time outdoors. Learning through play is vital for children during the most important period of human development. Overall, learning through play supports the holistic development of young children, making it a crucial element of their early years education.

In East Lothian, we plan using the East Lothian Frameworks. Realising the Ambition underpins our practice around interactions, experiences and spaces.
We follow the planning system shown. Our plans are displayed on our nursery planning board within the playroom. This ensures that practitioners are providing a good balance of intentional planning and responsive planning to support the progression of learning for all children within our setting. Our working plan is in place for two weeks and will be evaluated by the practitioners to inform our next working plan.
The practitioners follow the planning cycle as part of our planning process. This is used to identify the children's stage of develop and to extend and enhance the children's learning based on their interests and ideas. They will also use this as a way of collating information on each individual child to inform their tracking, looking at how we can support and challenge each child.
At Law Nursery we record children's learning by tracking their development using the Curriculum for Excellence: Experiences & Outcomes at Early Level. We share their learning through a variety of different ways which include: in our planning where we gather children's voice, their ideas and suggestions, on our display boards to share children's art work, photographs and mark making and also through their learning stories.
Each child will have their own individual learning story which is in the format of a book which the staff members will support the children to be a part of document their own learning. We have opportunities throughout the year to come in for Share My Learning as well as Stay & Play sessions where you can have a look at what your child has been doing. We base our learning stories on the four contexts of learning (see photo). This allows us to take a holistic approach when observing and recording the children's development.

The majority of learners within nursery are supported to work towards the Early Level of the Curriculum for Excellence.
It is important to note that each learner, at all levels of the curriculum spanning from age 3-18, are recognised as individual learners within Curriculum for Excellence therefore learning is adapted no matter where each child is developmentally. This means that some children in nursery will be working towards pre-early level milestones and others may begin to access elements of learning within First level where appropriate.
We follow Scotland's National Curriculum resource for Relationships, Sexual Health and Parenthood,(RSHP) education for children and young people. To see the full resource click on the link.
