Welcome!
Situated in the coastal town of North Berwick, Law Primary School Nursery is an East Lothian Council Nursery which works in partnership with and feeds Law Primary School. You can find out more information about Law Primary School on their website here. At Law, we pride ourselves on our outdoor provision, which allows children the space and opportunity to explore all areas of the curriculum, adopting a rights-based and active learning approach.
We hope that this website provides you with all the information you will need to know about nursery life.
Have a look at what we've been doing at nursery...
What we have been learning about:
It has been so lovely welcoming our new children into the nursery. All are doing really well and are fitting in nicely to our daily routine. The children have been learning how they can use questions to understand and predict what is happening in story books. They have also been great at telling us about their own experiences that relate to the stories we have read.
In maths, we’ve been learning about 2D and 3D shapes. The children have been learning shape names by discovering all the different shapes inside and outside the nursery.
In Health and Wellbeing we have continued to focus on learning about what substances are safe and what ones are unsafe.Out in the garden the children have been building dens and to give them a bit of shade when it’s been very sunny. They have been working really well together to communicate how they think it should be created and how to make it safe.
What we are learning about next:
Asking questions to find out more will be a continued focus for the last couple of weeks of this term. We will also continue to explore the world of shapes. A great way to support this learning with your child is to look out for shapes in the environment when you are out for a walk, e.g. road signs are circles, drains are squares etc.
Way Finding and New Signage
Project Play and supporters and the staff team have received many positive comments about the new signage and ‘way finding’ artwork around the playground gates. Thanks go to Project Play for their help in developing this element of our school estate. The orientation process around the school will now be much clearer, while offering a learning opportunity to the pupils.
Arrangements for main entry access to the school has now changed. We are now using the ‘south-east’ gate (yellow circle) as opposed to the ‘north-west’ gate (plum oval). The rationale around this decision has been discussed at Parent Council meetings, and centres on the desire to improve safeguarding by minimising visitor footfall within the playground. The new main entrance provides a clearer ‘line of sight’ for staff to observe visitors through the school day, and reduce the unsighted walk through the playground from the north-west gate.
This means that the gate beside the dining room (plum oval) will be locked during school hours, but will be open for nursery drop-off and collection from 15:05.
As part of our P1 transition activities, we are looking for some helping hands! We'd love to invite any parents, carers or other family members who can knit, to help us create some CALAMARI. These represent our Health and Wellbeing Indicators: Safe Healthy Active Nurtured Achieving Responsible Respected Include (SHANARRI). We appreciate any support for our special project to help the children's journey to school. If you're interested, please see the instructions below, or if you have any questions, please ask Mrs Sutherland.
We are pleased to share that we won a Gold Award for the Royal Caledonian Horticultural Society Spring Bulb Show 2025. Well done to all the children who helped grow our beautiful daffodils.
Here is a copy of our planning for our final term this year.

As part of our maths focus: Time, we have been learning about what devices we use to measure time such as clocks and sand timers. At our Arts & Crafts station, the children have been using some of the resources to make their own clocks. We were also practicing counting the numbers forwards and backwards on the clock. The children shared lots of wonderful facts about clocks:
"My clock tells me it's quarter past three, so I know it's lunch time!"
"The clock tells me when it's first pick up. We need to know when it's bedtime."
"For Mummy to pick me up and it's when it's snack time."
"I use the clock to tell the time!"
"For pick up! I'm always first pick up!"
"If you don't know what time it is, you have to ask Mummy & Daddy."
"So if it's pick up time or not pick up time yet. I'm going to keep my clock at half four!"

Some of the children chose to help Mrs Gibberd bake last week for afternoon snack. They made some yummy, healthy banana muffins! The children did a great job following the recipe.

During Gather Time, the children have been learning about our fire evacuation plan as part of our ‘People Who Help Us’ theme. They had the chance to walk through the fire evacuation procedure and have been learning what to do if the fire alarm sounds. There’s been a lot of interest in firefighters, some children were creating fire stations at the block area, others dressing up pretending to be fire fighters! We’ll be expanding this topic to explore other important jobs in our community.
We are excited to enhance the children's learning by offering them real-life experiences, such as meeting and talking to people with interesting jobs. We’re looking for parents, carers, or other family members who would be willing to visit and share information about their careers. In the past, we’ve had a family member who is a police officer come in, wearing their uniform and bringing in some of their equipment, which the children loved! If you would like to participate, please let us know.

Within the Health & Wellbeing part of our Curriculum, we learn about physical activity. This includes learning about importance of being active, why it's important for us to drink water, recognising each other's achievements and celebrating them. The children have been interested in using materials and resources outdoors to create their own obstacle course. The practitioners have provided the children with more resources and provocations to invite them to take part in other physical activities outdoors.

As part of our recent planning, we have been looking at the different signs of Spring. The children have been talking about things they have noticed such as flowers blossoming, new animals being born and they've even spotted some insects in the garden. At Gather Time, we planted some bulbs and over the past few weeks, we have watched them grow into beautiful daffodils. Indoors the children have made some wonderful creations at our arts and crafts station, we've seen some children taking part in Spring yoga and doing some Spring themed puzzles on our interactive whiteboard!
Extending the learning at home is important for children as it reinforces concepts of learning from nursery by having repeated exposure which strengthens development of skills and learning, as well as retaining and consolidating information.
Here's a few ideas to support our current planning:
Spring (Seasons)
Maths & Numeracy - Time
· Discuss what happens in different seasons
· When out for a walk, look for signs of Spring
Time (Days of the Week)

· Planting seeds
· Using roots from fruit/vegetables to grow roots and plant https://www.ruralsprout.com/regrow-vegetables.

The children have were making their own pancakes for snack. We also read Mr Wolf's Pancakes at Gather Time. The children demonstrated great listening skills when learning to make pancakes and then had the choice of which topping they'd like to add for their special pancake snack!
