It is important that we begin to teach children about sustainability at an early age, because habits learnt early will last a lifetime! Teaching children about sustainability can help them learn compassion, thoughtfulness, and to see the interconnectedness of the world around them. Children can not thrive on a planet that is devoid of green spaces, lacking clean air and water, and over run by pollution.
Sustainability is concerned with protecting the planet, halting climate change and promoting social development, without endangering life on Earth or leaving anyone behind. This concept seeks to cover our present needs without compromising resources for future generations.
What can we do to promote sustainability in our settings?
Reducing the single use plastics that are consumed in your nursery is easy. Glitter, sequins, plastic tape are easy to live without. Cut back on use of felt-tip pens- use paint, crayons and pencils instead! Use wooden toys over plastic ones
Reuse plastics and paper products when you can. Paint and glue bottles for the mud kitchen, smaller containers for art projects. Paper can be cut up and reused for sensory or art. Use plastic pots for planting and use water tray water for plants.
Make sure that your nursery has recycle bins, and that children understand how to use them. Discuss what can and can't be recycled with your children. Have a food recycling bin for your snack time and recylce during lunch
