Scottish Government have launched information for settings, children and families about the Scottish Milk and Healthy Snack Scheme.
Meal times are the perfect time to build attachments and have positive, nurturing interactions with the children.
Use meals to promote children's voice & choice by asking them to be involved in choosing snacks, baking and cooking food for their friends to enjoy
Promote independence by having children self-serve
Create a homelike atmosphere for the children- use tablecloths, flowers on the table, soft music, and napkins.
Be relaxed and unhurried so that children can enjoy this nurturing time with friends and staff
Keep mealtimes healthy and well-balanced, introduce new foods and expand the children's palate
Help children learn where their food comes from and what foods are in season throughout the year
Staff should sit with the children and engage them in conversation, creating a loving atmosphere where staff can role model appropriate manners and interactions
Help foster positive associations with food, and remember that food does not have a moral value.
Create a sense of family and community by having positive interactions between children
