This page will feature presentations, interesting articles and professional learning opportunities delivered in East Lothian to help you to develop high quality learning outdoors in your setting. It will be updated regularly so don't forget to return and check out what's new.
This course, lead by members of the Outdoor Learning Service and the Early Learning and Childcare Support Team, is packed with practical ideas and outlines six steps that will help practitioners to embrace and enjoy supporting learning and playing outdoors at all times of the year, but especially on those colder and wetter days. It includes how to dress to be comfortable, how to make the most of those natural resources in the nursery outside space or further afield, inspiring videos and ideas to try.
You can access the training here.
A six part module funded by the Scottish Government and developed by the Scottish Advisory Panel for Outdoor Education team. Liz Brookes, Principal Teacher, East Lothian Outdoor Learning Service, is a member of this advisory team and helped to develop this course. It is for anyone who has a role in supporting the delivery of curricular based outdoor learning.
The course is aimed at anyone who wants to deliver meaningful outdoor learning experiences. The course will help participants to gain an understanding of the Curriculum for Excellence, and the framework for delivering this to children. This is a generic course and does include school based examples, however the underpinning principles and information is equally relevant for those of us working in the early years.

An exploration of the theory and research underpinning learning outdoors and the learning that can be supported through different experiences using the natural outdoor environment
This course is designed and delivered by Cycling Scotland and will equip nursery staff to plan and deliver the Play on Pedals programme to nursery-aged children
Course Overview:
A full day interactive, practical and fun training course that teaches participants how to deliver a Play on Pedals programme.
Play on Pedals teaches nursery age children:
about the parts of a bicycle
how to fit a helmet correctly
the basics of looking after their bikes
Through a series of fun and imaginative activities, children will be helped to develop their balance and control skills often using a pedal-less balance bike. Play on Pedals has strong links to the Curriculum for Excellence and the programme increases children’s physical activity and play in early years settings. In addition, the Play on Pedals initiative has shown to improve children’s learning habits, behaviours and health and wellbeing.
COST: Free to all East Lothian Council early years settings, funded providers and childminders.
East Lothian has a fleet of bikes and helmets available for short term loan to get your Play on Pedals programme started once you have completed the course. We do however encourage all settings to source funding (we can share ideas) to purchase your own equipment.
New training starting January 2023!
