In order to maintain your SSSC registration you have the responsibility of maintaining and continuing to develop your professional knowledge and skills by participating in relevant learning. Your employer also plays a part in supporting you to do this by providing learning and development opportunities to strengthen and develop your skills and knowledge. Continuous Professional Learning (CPL) is as important as your formal qualification and as your experiences widen will be something you will naturally strive to do.
The early learning and school age childcare workforce across Scotland has been given a boost to their professional learning with new resources from the Scottish Social Services Council (SSSC).
We now host the National Directory of Continuous Professional Learning (CPL) for the Early Learning and Childcare Workforce.
The directory supports the early learning and school age childcare workforce and their employers with their professional development by listing training providers and the flexible and part time learning opportunities available. It was developed in line with the Scottish Government’s Early Learning and Childcare Quality Action Plan.
CPL Directory for the Early Learning and Childcare Workforce
SSSC launched their new continuous professional learning (CPL) requirements on 3rd November 2020 to provide clear expectations for continuous professional development for the social service workforce. This includes a new approach to recording, submitting and monitoring PRTL - Post Registration Training and Learning.
Please remember you are responsible for logging your own professional learning and should do so in conjunction with your setting manager or member of the senior leadership team in your school. You may be asked and we strongly encourage you to share your learning with other practitioners and lead development for maximum impact in the setting. External scrutiny from Care Inspection and HMIE inspectors will look for the impact of any training undertaken by practitioners and will have the expectation that staff will engage in discussion about their training and the difference it has made.
Care Inspectorate have developed a new app, MyLearning, to help you record and reflect on the learning you do every day. It’s free and you can use it to record your continuous professional learning (CPL).
MyLearning is for any social service worker and is an easy way to record your learning as you go. You might have an interesting conversation with a colleague, attend a webinar, watch a documentary or listen to a podcast. You can record and reflect on your learning from all of these as part of your CPL.
MyLearning allows you to:
set yourself learning targets and view your progress
record learning logs
tag your learning logs so you can easily find them later
use your learning logs for Open Badges
share your learning logs with others, such as your manager or a potential employer.
Registered workers don’t need to use MyLearning to record their CPL but it’s available if they want to. If you downloaded your previous PRTL record from MySSSC before 31 October 2020, you can attach this Word document to a new learning log in MyLearning
Training - SVQ units, courses such as child/adult protection and first aid.
Reading - books, Scottish Government policy information, journal articles, newspapers, online publications.
Job shadowing / Interesting Practice visits- another member of staff in your own organisation or another organisation.
Independent research - as part of a qualification or in order to further develop an area of your practice.
Training delivered by East Lothian Council within and out with your setting.
Self-evaluation – collaborative or individual to inform change, development and improvement of the setting.
You will have opportunities to reflect on your practice and personal learning with your manager or a member of your leadership team, these professional conversations should then be supported by your annual professional review and development (PRD) meetings to highlight your next steps. This process allows you, the practitioner, to plan for improvement and become even better. It also promotes inclusion and enables us to best meet the increasingly diverse needs of all learners.

SSSC Learning Zone: All resources
The single most important driver of the quality of a child’s early learning and childcare (ELC) experience is a high quality workforce. Continuous professional learning (CPL) is an essential component of ELC quality and is linked to children’s development. We want a well-trained, professional and skilled workforce with access to high quality training resources to help deliver the best ELC experience for our children. Evidence suggests that CPL helps ensure staff are aware of best practice and are continually supported in their workplace.
Being an online resource these modules also seek to address barriers to learning through virtual and distance models, providing flexible, accessible and affordable learning.
