John Kenn Mortensen Sticky Note Sketch Diary

Mortensen's drawings on sticky notes take up the entire sheet of paper and are filled with many different kinds of lines, shapes, patterns and textures to complete the composition. They often depict normal every day scenes which suddenly become interrupted by the appearance of spooky monsters.

ASSIGNMENT:

• You will draw a new scene every day for this week. The scene must include a person going about doing mundane (normal) every day things such as reading a book, going to the grocery store, sleeping, going to school, etc. The scene must be interrupted by the appearance of spooky monsters
• Each monster must be different every day and must contain some kind of texture (spikes, slime, hair, thorns, stone, etc). All monsters and characters must be original- be creative!
• The scene must have a background that showcases the scene of the story (for example, draw bookshelves and books if the person is in a library or draw produce or products on display if the person is in a grocery store)
• Each picture must include at least 4 different types of lines (examples: short lines, wavy lines, hatching lines, cross-hatching lines, spirals, thin lines, thick lines etc)
• No empty space- the image must take up the entire sticky note, index card or sheet of paper that you are using. Your use of space must appear deliberate.
• All lines and marks must be crisp, clean and deliberate. Take your time and make sure all your marks are neat and don't appear rushed or sloppy
• The images should be done on sticky notes, index cards, or calendar page squares. If you dont have any of these types of papers, then you can use your sketchbook or a regular sheet of paper and draw 5 small square of approximately 3 inches by 3 inches. Do this week's drawings in these small squares. You do not have to go out and buy a sketchbook, any small piece of paper will do.
• Pens, micron pens, and ultra-fine tip sharpies are preferable but any type of pencil will do, just make sure your lines are clearly visible.

Include the following information with your drawing:

• Title of your drawing
• Write a short story in 1 or 2 sentences that describes your spooky scene: For example "Suddenly Johnny woke up and heard a mysterious voice coming from the closet. "Hello? Is someone there?" he whispered. "Go back to sleep, this is just your imagination,!" he heard the voice reply.
• List the types of lines that you used

Submit your assignment to the google classroom

Make sure to include your name, date, class period and written information (title, short story, description of lines) in the "add private comment" section before submitting your assignment. If you are turning in a physical assignment packet or paper containing this week's drawings, make sure you include the written information on the side of your sticky note or small square.
