Description: For this challenge use pen or pencil for a series of observational drawings (This means to draw what we see) on unconventional surfaces and papers. We will draw on notebook paper, newspaper, envelopes (be creative). If you have blank paper and prefer that, it is okay but not necessary.
People do not realize that drawing is similar to sports. We must train our eyes to see details, and our hands to match that as we draw.
Option 1: Use your Google Classroom to turn in photographs of your work in the daily assignment.
Option 2: Keep a log, diary, or paste your drawings into your sketchbook (if you have it at home). I can take a picture of your work to take home when I get your sketchbook back.
Artists who use unconventional surfaces
(This means drawing on something other than traditional drawing paper)
● Polish Artist, Nikifor Krinicki would use discarded paper, paper scraps he would piece together, and even cigarette cartons to make his naive art (art made by someone who has not had any formal training):
● Spanish artist, Sara Landeta started painting on the inside of medicine boxes after her mother was diagnosed with cancer. Drawing on top of her mother’s discarded boxes helped her find a new meaning during a difficult situation. To her, the birds symbolize “hope and freedom...because birds always keep their desire to fly.” (Flow Magazine, Issue 11)
Other examples of up-cycled and unconventional papers:
Objective: Draw 2 different items that you see. But make sure to pick an item with detail. (examples: a house, car, shoe, furniture, pile of clothes, backpack, chair)
● Remember to try to use different “upcycled” papers. This can be a coffee cup, a piece of cardboard, a receipt, a piece of a phonebook.
Language Objective: Use the words line, shape, value and texture in order to understand how to describe a drawing
Objective: Draw the same items as yesterday, but use wiggly lines instead. They can overlap, the wiggles can be quite zigzaggy or they can be a little more flat as long as they are not smooth.
Language Objective: Use the words line, shape, value and texture in order to understand how to describe a drawing
For more information on various types of line rendering techniques (Shading) click on the link called "Shading and Mark Making" or click on the "Element of art: Value" link to refresh your memory on the unit on value
Objective: Draw two new items. Use short straight lines, they can overlap or barely connect.
Language Objective: Use the words overlap, straight and dotted in order to understand implied line and rhythm/movement.
Examples:
Objective: draw the same two items as yesterday, but draw them using a strong single line, you can pick up your pencil, just make sure to make clean connections.
Language Objective: use the words continuous contour line in order to understand artist drawing techniques and practices
Examples:
Objective: Draw a new item using your favorite type of line, pick something important to you. But keep details in mind.
Language Objective: Use the words contour, value, line, implied line and value in order to understand drawing techniques and practices
