Orchestra

Grades 6-8 Orchestra Course Description

The Orchestra program is designed to enhance the musical, creative and expressive qualities of music students. The major emphasis is on performing music for small and large groups with appropriate tone, tune, and time. Orchestra students will develop the skills necessary for ensemble reading, decoding, and performing level appropriate literature. Students will work cooperatively with other students in the musical organization and serve the school by participating in performances.

  • Major & minor scales
  • Rhythm counting & various meters
  • Whole, half, quarter, eighth, sixteenth, dotted notes, triplets, and equivalent rests
  • Research and emulate professional models
  • Stylistic articulation and interpretation
  • Dynamic expression and notation, including vibrato and third position
  • Ensemble skills (multiple rhythmic and/or pitch layers)
  • Diverse literature, Winter & Spring concerts annually
  • Equipment cleaning & maintenance, learning to tune instruments
