Grades 6-8 Band Course Description

The Concert and Jazz Band program is designed to enhance the musical, creative and expressive qualities of music students. The major emphasis is on performing music for small and large groups with appropriate tone, tune, and time. Band students will develop the skills necessary for ensemble reading, decoding, and performing level appropriate literature. Students will work cooperatively with other students in the musical organization and serve the school by participating in performances.

• major & minor, chromatic scales

• rhythm counting & various meters

• whole, half, quarter, eighth, sixteenth, dotted notes, and equivalent rests

• research and emulate professional models

• stylistic articulation and interpretation

• dynamic expression and notation

• ensemble skills (multiple rhythmic and/or pitch layers)

• diverse literature, multiple major annual performances

• equipment cleaning & maintenance
