Students at Parkdale have ELA daily for 90 minutes.
K-2nd grades build skills in beginning reading and writing through letter sound connection, blending sounds, phonics instruction, as well as comprehension through read alouds. Curriculum materials from Core Knowledge Language Arts is used
3rd grade
4th grade uses texts such as Love That Dog and Eagle Song and others to build comprehension and inferential thinking skills. 4th grade also uses Scholastic Storyworks which provides a variety of genres (fiction, non-fiction, poetry, plays, infographics) as well as some grammar and word usage activies that students find very engaging.

Students in EAMS take ELA daily:
5th grade one 60 minute ELA block
6th grade one 40 minute English and one 40 minute reading
7-8 grade 40 minutes
All ELA classes in EAMS focus on building a community of lifelong readers and writers who understand how to effectively collaborate with others and communicate their ideas to the world.
5th grade focuses on building an understanding of reading and writing by using texts such as Scholastic's Storyworks and the novel Espernza Rising.
6th grade focuses on realistic and historical fiction. The Lightning Thief is a student favorite.
7th grade blends choice reading with novels such as A Long Walk to Water and Downriver.
8th grade offers students a chance to explore new genres such as horror and thriller, dystopia, and Holocaust literature.

The English department provides an inclusive environment and diverse experiences to help each student prepare to live in society as contributing, responsive, and caring citizens. Our program fosters a lifelong desire for knowledge and skills that enable students to have positive and productive dialogue with others. Our teachers promote learning that will help students to grow as readers, thinkers, speakers and writers.
The Honors Courses and Global Leadership Academy in 9th and 10th grade continue to be guided by the NYS Next Generation Learning Standards while also emphasizing activities that prepare them for the rigors of AP Seminar (grades 10, 11 or 12), AP Language and Composition (grades 10, 11 or 12), AP Literature and Composition (grades 10, 11 or 12), and AP Research (grades 11 or 12, following completion of AP Seminar). These courses expect students to have the skills and knowledge presented in earlier courses well in place.
In accordance with New York State requirements, all students are required to earn four credits in English and pass the ELA Regents examination.
Courses in 9th, 10th and 11th grade address the NYS Next Generation Learning Standards for ELA in order to develop the necessary skills for successfully completing the NYS Regents Examination in English. Students take this exam for the first time in June of their junior year.
All 12th grade English courses continue to address the NYS Next Generation Learning Standards with the goal of preparing students to be college and career ready by the end of the senior year.
