If you need to create an Open House video, you can use Google Slides and Screencastify to create your video. You will also learn how to turn on closed captioning to generate closed captioning in Google Slides when you create the video. The captions will be created under the Google Slide.
Step 1: Create your Google Slides for open house. Need a Google Slide template? Check out Google Slide templates at:
You can also create your own background using a background in Google Slides or an image.
Step 2: Create a transcript to read when you are recording the presentation.
Step 3: Make sure you have Screencastify as an extension on your Google Chrome browser. Screencastify is the red arrow with a camera inside it. See below. The extensions show up to the left of your image on the Google Chrome browser. If you don’t see it, click the puzzle piece to the left of your picture.
If you don’t see it, click the puzzle piece to the left of your picture. That opens up a box with a list of all of your extensions with their icon (Screencastify: red arrow with camera in it).
If Screencastify is not listed as an extension, click the three vertical dots on the right side of your profile picture, scroll down to More Tools, then click Extensions.
Search for Screencastify in the Search Bar. Toggle the bar in the right-hand corner of the Screencastify to the right. The toggle turns blue, indicating it is on.
Step 4:
Open the Google Slide Deck
Open the Screencastify app (Click on the Screencastify icon). See image to left.
In the Screencastify box that pops up, make sure the microphone is turned on and the webcam if you want to add a video of you talking on your Google Slides. Under more options, increase the time before the screen recording starts to the highest time setting (10 seconds).
Click Present. (You need to do the next two steps quickly.)
Go down in the left-hand corner and click the CC button for closed captions. If you don’t see it, click the three vertical dots, then click caption preferences, then toggle captions. (See the screenshot below.)
When the webcam video of you comes on, drag it by clicking on the middle of the webcam video and dragging it up to the right-hand corner of your slide. Otherwise, it will block some of the closed captioning.
Start reading your transcript.
Stop the recording when you are done and get the link. Your Screencastify videos are saved in your Google Drive.
If you need more help, here's a video that does not include the closed captioning step.
