Synthesis Essays
For our first synthesis essay, we argued whether or not Arthur Miller's portrayal of Tituba in The Crucible was historically accurate. My thesis was:
While many of the events that take place in ‘The Crucible’ line up with the historical truth, Arthur Miller's own depiction and portrayal of Tituba's personality and character is inaccurate because of his reshaping of Tituba's identity from Indian to an enslaved African, through his exaggerated changes to Tituba's diction to make her seem different and natural to everyone else, almost as it she were not even truly human, and Miller's own "Note on the Historical Accuracy of this Play” can be used as supporting evidence to prove he did make inaccurate changes to Tituba's character.
I used Source B, “Witchcraft: A History in Thirteen Trials,” Source A, ‘The Crucible,’ and Source C, "A note regarding the Historical Accuracy of The Crucible" as sources.
For our first rhetorical analysis essay, we analyzed a passage of Arthur Miller's article, "Why I Wrote The Crucible." My thesis was
Miller claims he wrote “The Crucible” because he found himself within the character, “John Proctor,” and felt a strong desire to write a play in inspiration of him. This is all revealed through Miller's use of pathos, the suspension in his tone, and his allusions towards the events in his own life that he believed connected him to John Proctor.
I used Miller, Arthur. “Why I Wrote “The Crucible.”” The New Yorker, 13 October 1996 as my source for this essay.
