Shaping our World
How can understanding the achievements and cultural legacies of ancient civilizations help us appreciate and preserve the diverse cultures that shape our world today?
Understanding the achievements and cultural legacies of ancient civilizations helps us appreciate the diversity of cultures by showing how each has contributed to shaping our modern world. It teaches us how to respect different traditions and values, while encouraging us to preserve and celebrate the different identities and heritages that exist around the world.
Mud Brick: We used shovels and hoes to combine dirt, sticks, and water in order to create the mud. Then, we shoveled it into the brick outline and created the mud brick.
Bamboo: I helped in building the structures by tying the bamboo together to create a house. The knots I made were very tight and good.
This related to World History because of what we’d been learning about. It related to Geometry because of how we were cutting the bamboo and building the shelters strategically. It related to World Literature because the things we did were similar to how people lived in The Epic of Gilgamesh.
We chose our groups for our new project, which was making a video about a story in an ancient civilization that had a message that could relate to modern issues. In our groups, we chose to create our project about Ancient Egypt answered our questions. I did research to learn more about Ancient Egypt and its communities so we could create a great story.
My contributions:
Religion:
How did religious beliefs and divine beings guide the behavior of people in this civilization?
The many gods people believed in dictated how they lived their lives, how they treated others, how they worked and farmed, and everything they believed about the afterlife. The ziggurats served as ritual locations that allowed people to commune with the gods. The people of Ancient Egypt saw the pharaohs as gods because of their power, which was given to them only by kinship. Examples of gods were: Isis(Goddess of the moon), Thoth(God of wisdom), and Osiris(God of the underworld).
Society:
How are communities organized in this civilization, and what are their values?
Communities in Ancient Egypt formed around shared belief in the same God. In Abydos, one of the most ancient cities in Egypt, the citizens all worshiped the god of the dead Osiris(also known as Khenti-Amentiu and Anubis). They built monuments and temples in their city to worship their tutelary god and based their values and ideals off of them.
Script
We spent days writing our Script with who would play who, what would happen, how the plot would advance, how we could convey our messages, and how the story would end.
At the end, we did a table read for the whole class to hear, and we read out our script as if it was happening. We also helped other groups revise their own script and gave them useful tips to improve.
We learned about acting and improv from Dad's Garage Acting Class. It helped us a lot when we filmed our video for our Shaping our World project.
Throughout two weeks my group filmed out 5 scenes and created our video. I acted as a servant to Octavian, the first Roman Emperor. In this part of the video, Octavian receives new of Caesar's death in Egypt, and he vows to take revenge on Cleopatra and take over Egypt. I also acted as Cleopatra's brother. It was fun acting and directing what happened. I think our material turned out well. Our editor, Andrew, edited the video over Fall break for us so we could present it when we got back.
