For harp, we started to practice performing for gigs, and for this particular project we practiced gigs for weddings. This was joined with theatre. We were put into groups of 3-4 and decided on a menu to provide to our "wedding guests". On those menus were songs we were willing to play for the weddings and our ideas for a clean and perfect song combination.
Reflection-
Throughout this project I could've used my time more wisely. I used the last couple of weeks to learn my piece, which resulted in me being rushed. I could've used my time much better. What I did well was, practicing creating an ending no matter where I was stopped in the piece and played very well for the final wedding. I also watched during the performance to match my playing to the flow of the wedding. My group provided a very simple, yet eye-catching menu and we communicated very well. Overall, my main takeaway is to not procrastinate.
For my arranging project I chose the piece “This Place Hotel (Heartbreak Hotel)” by The Jacksons. This song was released on their Triumph album, and was written, composed, and arranged by Michael Jackson! I have always been a fan of Michael Jackson’s music, and I wanted to do a piece with lots of musicality in it, which brought me to this song. I very much enjoy the melodies and harmonies, along with the bass line. I’ve always loved listening to guitar solos, and now I will be able to play one on the harp. My favorite part of the song is the ending. The song “ends” with a chromatic scale and then goes into D major chord pattern. I really think the key change enriches the song and changes the mood. While this piece is very musically beautiful to listen to, unfortunately it’s very chromatic. Playing anything with lots of chromatic scales or accidentals can be difficult on the harp, because of the amount of pedal changes needed to play those notes. This is very prominent in “This Place Hotel,” which is what prompted me to split the song into 3 harp parts. One part holds the bass line throughout the song. The second part has the melody, ending key change, and guitar solo. The third part has the piano accompaniment and some accented notes. Separating the piece into parts made it much easier to play. Another challenge with this piece was that there was no lead sheet music for it. In order to play this piece, I used an online pdf sheet music, listened to a pianist break down the ending chords, and wrote the melody by ear. Overall this piece was challenging to arrange, but had a very rewarding result!
