For this project, I had to select a notable individual from the Periodic Table of Black History. I had to craft a compelling research question that will steer my research. Next, I had to create a presentation based of the indiviual we chose. For my Black History Month Presentation, I chose Serena Williams and write an impact statement comprised of one thoughtful paragraph that explains what your subject achieved and how they influenced their community or even the world. To deepen the presentation, I recorded a 1–2 minute personal reflection video where I had to summarize what I learned, make a connection to my own life, or explain how my subject inspired me.
After reading the epic Sundiata: An Epic of Old Mali, we were assigned to write an essay that analyzes and explains which part of Sundiata’s journey can be considered the most heroic. The story of Sundiata is filled with trials, triumphs, and moments of transformation that align closely with the traditional elements of the hero’s journey. In this essay, I focus on the “origin” or beginning phase of Sundiata’s journey, which I believe is the most heroic and significant part of his story. While later stages—such as his rise to power or his eventual return to claim his rightful place—are certainly heroic in their own ways, it is the origin, where Sundiata must overcome physical limitations, doubt, and hardship, that best defines his strength of character and lays the foundation for his greatness. This essay will explore how Sundiata’s perseverance, inner strength, and destiny begin to emerge during this early stage, making it not only a powerful start to the epic, but also the most heroic part of his entire journey.
I chose this particular moment in the story because it clearly illustrates Sundiata’s perseverance and determination in the face of great challenges. Despite being mocked and doubted by those around him due to his physical limitations, Sundiata never gave up. Instead, he continued to push forward and eventually proved his strength and potential, showing that true greatness often comes from within. The images I selected for this project help retell the story visually by capturing key moments from Sundiata’s journey. They allow the viewer to see the progression and growth of his character, almost like a timeline of his transformation from an underestimated boy to a powerful and respected leader.
Through this visual representation, I want the audience to understand a deeper message: it doesn’t matter what others think or say about you—what matters most is how you respond and rise above their doubts. Sundiata’s story reminds us that we all have the power to shape our own destiny, even when the odds are against us. I hope that viewers take away the idea that strength, courage, and determination can overcome even the harshest criticism or obstacles. By proving others wrong, Sundiata not only changes how people see him, but also inspires others to believe in themselves and keep pushing forward no matter what.
