The objects around us come in various shapes and sizes. In general, we can see shapes such as triangles, squares, and circles everywhere around us. Moreover, shapes such as a sheet of paper, have only length and breadth. Thus such shapes are 2D or two-dimensional. While other shapes such as the shape of a house, have length, breadth, and height. Thus such shapes are 3D or three-dimensional. To learn more about 2D and 3D shapes this week’s activity was planned by Grade 2!
The activity was related to Shapes and Patterns. Class Teacher told the students to create their own shapes and patterns. Students followed Teacher's instructions and demo given by Teacher. They created and spoke about their 2D and 3D shapes. Material decided for activity was play dough or clay or wheat flour dough, matchsticks or toothpicks or pop sticks, any eatable food colour as per availability.
This week children came up with various shapes of their choice to represent the Math concept of Shapes and Patterns. Students displayed different shapes during the activity and enthusiastically participated in learning 2D and 3D shapes and enjoyed it in a play way method.
"Bunny Hop" Number Line Activity
This week’s Math with us Nashik activity planned for Grade 2 students was “Bunny Hop”. It was a number line activity including numbers from 0 to 20. Number lines are a big deal especially with little learners joining the math game. Number lines are (in a sense) the address to where a number lives.
It helps children to visualize the relationship of one number to another (16 is between 15 and 18; 4 is two more than 2).
As children develop in mathematical thinking, using a number line will be a critical part. Number lines help give a visual representation to the abstract nature of addition and subtraction.
The activity was related to solving Addition and Subtraction sums using a number line. Class Teacher told the students to use their own creativity while marking the number line and playing it indoors or outdoors as per their choice. Students followed Teacher's instructions and demo given by Teacher.
Material decided for activity was Drawing book/Scrap book and dice. One partner needed for playing along with the child so Teacher suggested to invite Mother/Father or Grandparents as per their time availability to add fun element in the activity.
This week children came up with various sums and their solutions of their choice to represent the Math concepts of addition and subtraction using number line. Students showed variations during the activity and enthusiastically participated in “Bunny Hop”.
