Choice - Learning Styles

In the attempt to infuse more student engagement into our classrooms, I recently researched how choice affects the motivation of gifted learners. At this time, I read about contract activity packages or CAPs. This is a format to design differentiated lessons based on student strengths through their learning styles or preferences. This website gives an example of how to create a list of activities from which students can choose. Starting with an objective and based on the standards, the teacher finds resources that allow students to complete learning activities. These activities should align with student learning styles such as auditory, visual, tactile or kinesthetic. (Examples are given in the text box above.) Educators can use this format to show students that they respect their preferred way to learn and their preferred way to show their learning. This transfer of power of giving the choice to the students can motivate them into taking control of their learning and being more engaged in the classroom.
