APPROACH
Theoretical/project based
The course focuses on theoretical-practical fundamentals of digital video. The goal is for the students to reach awareness and maturity in identifying suitable technical solutions on a movie set as VFX supervisors.
The project lab aims to introduce students to the world of compositing and to understand the basic principles of visual post-production practices. Students will learn the basic functions of the software Nuke through the use of selected shots and practical training.
The programme consists of one single module, which grants 6 CFA credits.
Successful students will be able to:
Evaluate the best photographic techniques for the shot
Recognise different kinds of lighting equipment and their use
Apply lighting and tracking techniques in order to achieved a desired result
Recognise the main techniques and implementations of compositing and post-production
Perform a critical analysis of existing projects
Compose and post-produce following a project brief
Thoroughly manage various media to implement a project
A general, introductory section is devoted to the understanding of the workflow related to digital video production (shooting, editing, post-production direction).
The following section aims at developing the broadest possible knowledge of all the roles connected to digital video, through targeted group practice
The final section is based on the production of a series of greenscreen shots
The project lab component of the course will develop compositing techniques on Nuke:
Compositing - basic concepts
Nuke: UI, use of a node-based system
Nuke: 2D animation
Nuke: colour correction
Nuke: warping and morphing
Nuke: keying, matte, rotoscoping
Nuke: matchmoving, cleaning, 2D set extension, 2D make-up
This is a theoretical/project based course.
Students will take part in the following activities, which may vary depending on the development of different projects:
Classroom lectures
Use of tutorials, videos or other media tools
Exercises and revisions
Workshops
Individual or group projects
Individual or group study and research
Assessment tools may include:
Completion of a project
Oral exam
Further details about the exams will be provided by the professors.
Books and resources might be requested or suggested by the professors.
