- Why?
- BEIS wants to stimulate the economy and medium sized businesses will have the biggest impact as they employ more people and deliver more growth to the area they operate.
- They are at the right maturity and would benefit from our schemes. They are a core target group.
- Key hypotheses to test:
- We believe that DBI will increase the propensity of medium sized businesses to participate in government schemes. (If we had DBI would it make a difference? for mid sized SMEs?)
- We believe DBI will deliver direct benefit to medium sized businesses. (Would it deliver a saving in admin costs? )

- 99.9% of all UK businesses are classed as SMEs (0-249 employees)
- 0.6% are medium-sized businesses (50-259 employees)
- Less than 4% are small businesses (10-49 employees)
- More than 95% are micro-businesses (0-9 employees)

- I need to be able to apply for an application within a time limit that does not negatively affect my ability to run my business
- I need to be able to identify and collaborate with other funding applicants so that I increase my opportunities to innovate
- I need to know what the funding scheme is looking for within applications so that I can adapt my application to be successful
- I need the overall time from application to receiving funds to be short so that I don't lose competitive advantage in a fast changing market
