Tom and Cyndy McGrane 2016

Tom & Cyndy McGrane 2016 Honorees for the Monarch Wall of Pride

Cyndy McGrane taught French and Spanish for 37 years at the Denison High School. Being an employee does not qualify one to be honored unless the individual has gone beyond what is required for the job. Besides gaining certification to teach French for college credit, she took dozens of students to France and other French-speaking countries on her own time. She gained endorsement in Spanish education so she could help develop that program for the high school. Through the "Knit One, Save One" program, she taught students to knit infant caps, hundreds of which were sent to third world countries. Later they knitted scarves for American servicemen and women. She continued the knitting program after she retired and has volunteered with the elementary after-school tutoring program as well. She also works with the Crawford County Hospital Auxiliary.

Tom McGrane was a full-time teacher and counselor for 41 years, 39 of those years at DHS. He developed many new courses while serving as a chair of language arts and later the guidance department. His students from past decades recall his rigorous classes and his compassionate nature. He was president of the Denison Education Association and a finalist for the Iowa Counselor of the Year award in 2012. He coached the Academic Decathlon team that went to nationals seven times. Tom volunteers on the board of the Hospital Foundation of Crawford County and drives for their bus program. He is currently editor of the Monarch News for the alumni association. He spends many hours keeping the alumni up-to-date on the school and community. That alone would qualify him for the inclusion on the Wall of Pride, but in addition, Tom serves on the alumni association board and volunteers to work on projects from helping with Monarch Drive flags to homecoming.
