Nancy Miles

Nancy Miles began her career in education as a first grade teacher. She soon discovered that she wanted to share her love of reading and story telling with children of all elementary grade levels, so while continuing to teach full time, she began to take night classes and summer classes that would lead to her degree and certification in Library Science. When a position became available, Nancy gave up her first grade classroom and became a media center specialist in the Denison Elementary School. In this position, Nancy had contact with every elementary child, sometimes even traveling to the community schools in other locations. Nancy had charge of all books, magazines and other available reading materials, as well as all the supplementary visual products available on loan from county and state resources.

Her school year exceeded the usual 9 months. She arrived in the Media Center at least 2 weeks early in the fall so she could start checking in and cataloguing all the new materials that had been ordered for the media center and for the classroom teachers. At the end of the school year Nancy allowed teachers and students to keep checked out materials up until the last minute so they could be used in the classroom. Nancy always worked above and beyond in an effort to accommodate other teachers and of course the students.

Nancy has talents she shares outside her chosen profession. She is a gifted pianist and organist. All funeral homes and most churches recognize her ability and request her help at many memorial services. She is also an organist in her own church. She frequently performed services for shut-ins and the elderly.

Nancy is a caring person. She participated in Relay for Life activities for years and has promoted culture in the community through the Crawford County Arts Council.

Countless students have developed the love of books and reading through her efforts, a life-long benefit. She has always been aware of the early introduction of reading in the lives of children. She is a member of a philanthropic organization that promotes reading to infants by supplying a simple board book to each new-born at the Crawford County Memorial hospital.

Nancy devoted 34 years of her life to the Denison Community Schools, but her devotion and love for reading and sharing it with others will live on for generations.
