Our district works together to define the AVID criteria in order to build county wide consistency for our students and families.
AVID students consistently work hard in the classroom and engage with teachers, peers, and the content they learn. AVID students set short and long-term goals for themselves. They continuously raise the bar to elevate their own standards and pathway forward in life. Their end goal centers around success (for that individual) whether it is a four-year college, two-year college, vocational school, the military, or straight into a career pathway. AVID students need to embrace challenges as they will be pushed through a rigorous course load that will include honors courses along with AP classes or college-level courses (either online of face to face through dual enrollment at COA). (AP and college classes are for high school students only.) AVID students need to have a 3.0 weighted GPA or higher and they must maintain that standard throughout their time in the AVID program.
Students re-apply to stay in the AVID program next year and rising freshmen apply and are interviewed from the middle school.
Our AVID elective students have a student agreement contract which they, their parents, the AVID elective teacher, the AVID Counselor, and the AVID Site Team Coordinator sign off on.
Our student recruitment plans involves:
incoming freshmen recruitment, continuing AVID recruitment, teacher recommendations, and new-to-AVID recruitment.

Our teams meet at least monthly in order to drive our school's mission and SIP goals. We look through a lens of equity in order to ensure that all students are challenged and supported.
Our AVID Site Team supports the AVID coordinator, the AVID Elective teachers and the faculty and staff in the continuing operation of AVID. The Site Team works a team for the good of all students and faculty/staff.
Our 12th grade scheduling has built in tutoring for the next school year and this will continue to be one of the ways to retain tutors.
Our AVID tutors use collaborative structues such as Google documents for the students to submit their notes for each of their TRF's. This deveopes effective inquirty skills.
Below is a description of our MHS Tutoring Training Plan.
Here is a short video clip of AVID tutorial in action. Students use different levels of inquiry and the tutors grade the students based on the deeper level of questioning.
Our 3 AVID Elective teachers all received face-to-face instruction at the Tutorology training that was conducted at our school in September of 2022.
