College and career readiness is part of the school culture and mission and vision statement. It is embedded in everything we do. We have college and career fairs, college field trips, field trips to places like the Coastal Studies Institute, and we have financial aid (FAFSA) parent nights. Teachers make a consistent and concerted effort to make sure students are college and/or career ready. Our CTE department is expansive for such a small school. Students are placed in internships or given work experiences. Students are able to graduate with workplace certificates or associates degrees.
Our community comes together to provide a large amount of financial aid in the form of local scholarships for all seniors. Making college an affordable option is not just a focus of the AVID program, but the entire school and community.
AVID students and National Honor Society Students conduct community service and they are often made aware of those opportunities by the adults that run those programs. We created a public space that would make all these opportunities available to all of our students. This space includes instructions for how to sign up and who to contact with questions. This way, all students have access to community service and events.
Our district has two college advisors for it’s three high schools. These college advisors are from UNC-Chapel Hill and help our students with many aspects of preparing for college. Our college advisor also brings in representatives from colleges to speak during our Intervention Time (IT). We have had college advisors since 2016.
Our school has college fairs in the fall and career fairs in the spring for all our students to participate.
We do a good job on hallway decor and celebration of college acceptances for seniors.
From our feedback from the SIT/AVID/PTO committee, we would like to give all our students the opportunity to visit a college campus.
We would like to re-design our senior lounge to include college and career readiness posters.
We do a good job displaying college acceptance in our hallways and would like to incorporate career and military acceptance also.
