Movie reviews

By Justin Vinyard

Hello, all of you beautiful Scroll readers! If you’re like me and are struggling to perform CPR on a pillow for homework, then some movies are a good way to get rid of that pent-up anger. I suggest that, after you read this, you go and read Ella’s amazing book column (which this is definitely not a carbon copy of).

(If my Spanish teacher is reading this, then I will go watch my movies in Spanish and finish my Quizlets now.)

Where do I watch my movies?

I watch all of my movies on various streaming services. Usually, most of the movies I watch are on Disney+, which is $13.99 a year, Netflix, which is $17.99 a month, HBO Max, which is $14.99 a month, and Peacock which is absolutely completely free!

Guardians of the galAxy: vol. 2

Guardians of the Galaxy: Vol.2, the sequel to Guardians of the Galaxy was released in 2017 and is the 15th film in the MCU (Marvel Cinematic Universe, for you uncultured people). The basic plot of this movie is Peter Quill finding his father and then learning how to control his power on his father's home planet.

This movie was absolutely amazing to watch. The main reason I love it so much is just because of how comical and great all of the camera shots are. I definitely think that, out of all of the Marvel movies, this one is in the top 5, just because of its creativity.

I have three favorite scenes in this movie. Coincidentally, they are all in the beginning, middle and end. My first favorite scene would have to be at the beginning. The scene in question is the opening credits, where the guardians are defending some valuable batteries these golden people want. Also, Mr.Blue Sky was playing and I love that song.

My second favorite scene would have to be when Rocket and Xandu are killing tons of guys during their prison escape, while "Come A Little Bit Closer" is playing over the intercom for the prison. Having the music line up with the action is an impressive filming technique.

The last and best would have to be at the climax of the movie when the characters are on Ego’s planet and baby Groot is struggling to find out which button to push. I enjoyed this because I found Groot struggling to figure out something as simple as pushing the correct button extremely funny.

My overall thoughts are that this film was revolutionary and different from the Marvel movies that were out at the time of this release. I think that the way the producers made all of the music line up with the action sequences when there was an action scene with music was absolutely amazing. The Stan Lee cameo was also impressive, just because he's sitting on a rock talking about his other cameos.

Mamma mia!

Mamma Mia! Is a romantic-comedy musical featuring the music of pop band Abba. The movie was released in 2008 and is about Sophie Sheridan trying to find out who her real father is by inviting three men who her mother wrestled with on the sand. I thought that this movie was good, for being a musical and having a plot based around characters hooking up. If you have not read my article on To All the Boys: Always and Forever, then you should read it here because it will show how much I hate when this happens. Now, time for some of my favorite scenes.

Some of my favorite scenes, in order, are the "Honey, Honey" scene, "Lay All Your Love on Me", and "Thank You for the Music" scenes. The main reason that I like all of these scenes is because, as an ABBA fan, they represent the tone of the music very well, and the choreography is beautiful and just visually satisfying.

I find "Lay All Your Love On Me" the best scene in the movie, just because the footsteps of the men on the dock line up perfectly with the beat. Technically, the "Thank You for The Music" scene is not a scene at all because it is part of the credits, but I am counting it because the credits, in general, are amazing.

I like the credits of this movie because it is constantly breaking the fourth wall, which I find hilarious. During the credits, there is a shortened version of "Dancing Queen", which I find a lot better than the original one at the beginning of the movie.

My final favorite scene is the "Thank You For the Music" scene. This is technically the best scene in the movie because of the piano and the tone of this song. Even though it’s just music over the credits, I still consider it a scene and, if anyone disagrees with me, then I will just tell you you’re wrong.
