Creativity Corner

Calling all creative writers! This is a column run by Liv Akers and Mariah Lumsden to inspire readers to write. The column includes writing prompts, pieces by the coordinators, and occasional submissions from readers.

Calling all creative writers!

Welcome to Creativity Corner, a space for readers to write in The Scroll without necessarily being journalists! The deadline is May 26. We will be giving a $10 Dutch Bros gift card to the author of our favorite submission, so we hope to see you participate soon!

This month, our winner was Ireland Tyler! Scroll below to read her poem. :)

How to participate:

Below is a set of prompts for different styles of writing beyond journalism. The idea is that you can create some kind of creative writing piece inspired by one of the prompts, but it doesn't have to be! You can submit any piece of writing you'd like to share! All submissions should be school-appropriate.

Send in your submissions to gphsthescroll@gmail.com to be featured in the column! You are more than welcome to send in anonymously or put your name on your piece. Please just specify when emailing us. Thanks!

Prompts:

Here are some prompts to inspire your writing this month! If you try one, let us know how it goes. :)

  1. If you could live a day in someone else's shoes, who would it be, and how would it go?

  2. Write a letter to someone who used to be a big part of your life, and is not any longer. It can be addressed to them, but does not have to be.

  3. How will you tell your children / grandchildren / great-grandchildren etc. about the pandemic, years from now?

  4. For those of you who are writers / artists with original characters, write about a conversation you would have with one or several of your OC's, if you could.

  5. You are granted the ability to permanently change one aspect of yourself or any one person, physical or otherwise. Would you use it, and if so, who would you use it on, and what would you change?

Deja vu

Mariah Lumsden

I don’t know what day it is. You could feed me a lie of what day it was and I would believe you, no questions asked. I’ve been struggling with remembering the date. I always remember what day of the week it is, well I suppose that’s not even true.

Lately, I have been feeling as though every day is just the same as the last. Perhaps, by lately, I mean the past year or so. I remember the last day of March like it was mere hours ago. But now, it is the last day of March once again and it feels like an eternity I’ve been awaiting.

Will the next last day of March come again tomorrow?

The Sun is not so shy lately, I cannot say I feel the same way, though. I must say I have forgotten what the Sun feels like on my skin. It’s just a memory; and still I have not found the time to get out of this continuous loop and take a step outside. I remember the rubbery, dewy feeling of grass itching at my ankles as the Sun sprinkles warmth on the top of my head. Sometimes I will see the Sun through the window as it blinds me, but I don’t mind. Sometimes, I will see the Sun through the window, just slightly, and my eyes will deem it far too bright, even though it is just barely there.

The days where the Sun has disappeared are when I feel the most repetitive. The clouds stop time and keep it the same. I feel distant from myself more often these days. I think the clouds have corrupted my mind.

Blanket

Ireland Tyler

Soft, Heavy, Protected, Warm

Feeling as if that's the only thing that can keep you safe

Velvety, Thick, Guarded, Cozy

You feel the blanket wrapped around you as if it's a heavy cloud

Silky, Dense, Sheltered, Pleasant

My blanket you see is my safe place. Gives no judgement. I am comfortable, I am me and I am home.

Smooth, Solid, Secured, Comfy
