CONSTRUCTION PROJECT

The D49 Construction Project prepares students for emotional, social, and academic success through community service, small class sizes, and individualized educational opportunities. We use a relationship-based approach to ensure educational relevance and academic rigor.

Students who complete the Construction Pathway not only learn the fundamentals of skilled trades including Carpentry, Electrical, and Plumbing but also life skills needed to become productive members of society with a high earning potential and advancement opportunities in a skilled trade upon graduation. Students have the potential to earn industry-recognized certifications and can enter a Skilled Trades profession upon graduation.

YEAR 1: CONSTRUCTION I (Direct Instruction)
Introduce students to Building Trades Safety and First Aid, Hand and Power Tool Safety, Building Materials, and Employability. Reading a ruler, calculating fractions, reading, and drawing blueprints.

**Students are required to complete 15 hour of instruction through either 1) supervised culinary events or 2) approved work experience

YEAR 2: CONSTRUCTION II (Direct Instruction)
Designed to take students to the next level, including Metal Roofing, Shingling, Tile, and Vinyl Siding Introduction to Construction Code, and preparing for the inspection process. Calculate area, slope, materials list, cut list, and inventory.

CULINARY ARTS AND HOSPITALITY PROGRAM
Prerequisite: Application required
D49’s Culinary and Hospitality program focuses on hands-on and experiential learning. Housing the only fully operational, high school-based commercial kitchen in El Paso County, this program offers a unique opportunity to enter the workforce with a complete foundation toward a career in the food and beverage industry.

The Culinary and Hospitality Program offered at The Falcon Legacy Campus is a Career and Technical Education Program as defined by the Colorado Department of Education. It was the goal of D49 faculty and staff, in partnership with Patriot High School, to develop a program viable to the industry. Students enrolled in the program are held at the highest standards to ensure that successful graduates make skilled and effective resources for restaurants, hotels, and related businesses. While the program offers fun and excitement, it is also rigorous and demanding. Teamwork and professional skills are developed, and results are expected.

YEAR 1: CULINARY ARTS 1 (Direct Instruction)
Learn and apply basic culinary skills commonly required in the restaurant and hospitality industry, such as foodservice and kitchen safety, basic food preparation, nutrition, commercial equipment and hand tools, and service skills.

YEAR 2: CULINARY ARTS 2 (Direct Instruction)
Learn and apply complex culinary skills commonly required in the restaurant and hospitality industry, such as the kitchen brigade, garden manager, appetizer preparation, and stocks, sauces, and soups.

YEAR 3: CULINARY ARTS 3 (Direct Instruction)
Students earn the opportunity to learn leadership skills through mentoring and coaching first and second-year students. They coordinate menus and cater bi-monthly dinners served to the Board of Education and various district meetings. Advanced concepts in entrée preparation, pastries and desserts, accompaniments, and plating are explored. 

HAIRSTYLING PROGRAM ​- ​ (Direct Instruction)
The Hairstyling Program is a two-year program designed to train high school juniors and seniors to become hairstylists. This program was developed in partnership with School District 49 and International Salon and Spa Academy (ISSA).

The program is designed to prepare the student to sit for the hairstylist licensure examination given by the State of Colorado. Upon successful completion of the program, the student will have earned the 1,200 contact hours required by the State of Colorado to become eligible to test for the hairstylist licensure examination.
