Developing student responsibility is a goal that helps guide educational decision-making. Since students have the opportunity to pick most of their classes, they will be held accountable for following through with their course selections. Students requesting a schedule change will be required to schedule an appointment with the Dean of Academic Advisement.
Acceptable Requests:
Needed for graduation (Seniors only)
Not enough Classes
Failed prerequisite for a course
Examples or Unacceptable Requests:
Change of lunch period/be in class w/ friend
Request for teacher change
Counselor-initiated schedule changes may be required to balance class sizes or as the result of additions/deletions made to the master schedule. In this event, counselors notify students if their schedule is changed. These changes are final; counselors will not grant requests to change back to the former schedule as this only further disrupts an already disruptive process.
In the event that a student wishes to drop a year long course, the student must be sure to remain full time. Freshmen and Sophomores are required to have eight courses each semester and Juniors and Seniors may have six courses first semester and no fewer than five second semester. If a student wishes to drop an AP class, they must consult the teacher of the course and must be aware that they will not receive the AP credit for an unfinished course. Courses may only be dropped if graduation requirements will be met by other courses. It is possible that a teacher may recommend that a student be moved to a different level of a course at the semester break (i.e., from an Honors course to a general course or vice versa).
Students who wish to drop a course mid-semester may do so with the understanding of our Withdrawal/Fail policy. Students may drop a course up to two weeks after the start date of a semester with no penalties. After that point, students who drop a class will receive a Withdrawal/Fail (W/F) on their transcripts. This indicates that a student has chosen to drop the course and has received an F, this does impact the student's GPA.
