OBJECTIVE: I can tell what swing style is, Jazz, and ragtime. I can perform a cup game. I can create my own cup pattern.

Grab a piece of paper and write down at least one fact from each of the following videos.  

Jazz, 12 bar blues, and swing.

Watch this video about the origins of Jazz.  It highlights a famous composer named Jelly that influenced ragtime music as well in the next video.

Watch this video about the origins of swing music and some of the most influential composers who made it popular in the United States.

Listen and try this cup game.  This is called ragtime music that was made popular by Jelly Role Morton.

Still have your cup?  Make up your own cup game to this song called Back Porch Blues.

OBJECTIVE: I can identify instruments used in a piece by Beethoven. 

Watch the beginning of this composition by Beethoven called, The Hunt.  

Write down at least five instruments you see in the orchestra.  Save your paper for the next activity!

After watching the performances, use a format like this to help you decide. Think about the singers, instruments, melody, harmonics, tempo dynamics, and emotion.

2) Compare the performances. Which Performance did you Like the Best? Write 3-4 sentences telling which performance you liked the best, and why. Use musical terms in your answer.

Learn the simplified movements to the song Funga Alafia. The rhythm known as "Fanga" is from the Vai people of Liberia, West Africa. The words "Alafia" and "ashe" are from the Yoruba people of Nigeria. “Alafia” is a greeting word. “Ashe” means “so be it.”
